Il volume ripercorre gli anni salienti dell’attività dell’Istituto di Fisica di Arcetri, in occasione del centenario dell’inaugurazione. Il periodo prescelto, che permette di ricostruire la nascita di alcuni gruppi di ricerca presenti tuttora nel Dipartimento, va dall’arrivo di Garbasso nel 1913 alla fine degli anni Sessanta. Il testo contiene una prima parte sulla storia dell’Istituto di Fisica negli anni appena citati, cui segue una seconda parte in cui vengono delineate le schede biografiche di alcuni dei protagonisti. Nell’ultima parte viene riportato un indice dei titolari dei corsi di Fisica e di Astronomia, a Firenze, dal 1876 al 1969, risultato del lavoro di ricerca condotto presso l’Archivio Storico dell’Università di Firenze.

On 7 November 1921, the new Institute of Physics of the Royal Institute of Higher, Practical and Advanced Studies of Florence was inaugurated in Arcetri. Three years later, with the establishment of the University of Florence, the Degree Course in Physics would start: as such an adventure in research and scientific training began, which would take us to the present day. To mark the centenary of the inauguration of the Institute of Physics in Arcetri, the book takes the opportunity to retrace a part of those years. The period chosen ranged from the arrival of Garbasso in 1913 to the end of the 1960s. The book contains a first part, documenting the history of the Institute of Physics during the above mentioned years. This is followed by a second part, outlining the biographies of some of the protagonists of that history. In the final part, there is an index of the holders of the courses of Physics and Astronomy in Florence from 1876 to 1969. This landscape is the result of research work conducted in the University's Historical Archives of the University.

The exhibition: "La Fisica ad Arcetri. Dalla nascita della Regia Università alle leggi raziali" was organized by the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Florence and by the Florence Section of the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics, in collaboration with the Historical Archive of the Municipality of Florence, the Physical Science and Natural Mathematics Library of the University of Florence, the Science and Technology Foundation, and the "Galileo" Museum of Florence. It was held from May to September 2016 in the Exhibition Hall of the Municipal Historical Archive in via dell'Oriuolo, Florence. The time covered by the exhibition ranges from the birth of the Royal University of Florence (1924) to the enactment of racial laws in Italy by Benito Mussolini's government (1938). The exhibited material comes from the Municipality's Historical Archive, the Garbasso Archive, the Della Corte Fund, the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the Science and Technology Foundation and from private collections. The catalogue is published as the third volume of the series of publications associated with the magazine «Il Colle di Galileo»

La Mostra Astronomia e Fisica a Firenze illustra l’evoluzione delle due discipline dal XVIII secolo fino ai primi decenni del Novecento. Teatro cittadino di questo processo, anzi di tutte le scienze, fu l’Imperiale e Reale Museo di Fisica e Storia Naturale, dove adesso ha sede la Mostra. Nell’arco di tempo esaminato tutti gli aspetti dell’indagine della natura erano ugualmente pertinenti ad un’unica figura di studioso, ma verso l’inizio del XX secolo alcuni indirizzi subirono una profonda trasformazione e al prevalente approccio tassonomico e fenomenologico subentrò, soprattutto per Astronomia e Fisica, un’indagine specialistica che finì per differenziare le varie ricerche. Protagonista di questa fase fu lo sviluppo dell’analisi spettroscopica. La Mostra, aperta da dicembre 2016 a marzo 2017, è organizzata dall’Università di Firenze (Museo di Storia Naturale; Dipartimento di Fisica e Astronomia) e dall’Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri, in collaborazione con la Sezione di Firenze dell’INFN, il Museo Galileo, l’Archivio Storico del Comune di Firenze, l’Istituto Nazionale di Ottica del CNR e la Biblioteca di Scienze dell’Università.

Una storia dei 100 anni dell’Ateneo, calata nella lunga durata dell’alta formazione in città, dalle origini medievali e proto-moderne, alla sua progressiva istituzionalizzazione, alla vigilia dell’Unità e quindi nel periodo di Firenze capitale, sino alla nascita della Università degli Studi, il primo ottobre del 1924. La villa Il Gioiello si trova sulla collina di Arcetri vicino a Firenze: qui Galileo ha passato gli ultimi anni della sua vita, agli arresti domiciliari. L’architettura riflette lo stile del sedicesimo secolo: la struttura è di proporzioni generali misurate ed armoniche. La villa, restaurata di recente, pur essendo per Galileo una prigione, fu anche per lui un osservatorio, un luogo di studio e di riposo, nelle ore che passava ad aggiustare la vigna che cresceva fuori del cortile.
