Ma né gli uomini, né la natura si lasciano facilmente trasformare in specchio di qualcuno. In "L'uomo che era morto" Lawrence si misura con la vicenda paradigmatica della storia dell'Occidente: la morte di Cristo. E lo fa alla sua maniera, fedele all'idea che l'unica trascendenza possibile risieda nella quotidiana rinascita all'universo delle cose, e che il peccato più grande sia la rimozione del corpo come orizzonte profondo di significato spirituale. È infatti nel contatto con la natura e il sole della vita che l'uomo crocifisso inizia a riaversi dal sonno della morte e a osservare il mondo attorno a sé con sguardo nuovo e partecipe. Egli diviene consapevole che la vera risurrezione è l'essere rinato alla vita del corpo, abiura la vita passata e la sua astratta predicazione, che ora gli appare come l'espressione di una sconfinata e innaturale volontà di potenza. Il protagonista della sua storia non è neppure per un attimo il figlio di Dio, ma soltanto un uomo, protagonista di una storia esemplare.
