Les problèmes de population font partie des préoccupations de nombreux gouvernements ; depuis les années cinquante, et plus récemment en Afrique francophone, des politiques de population ont été élaborées dans de nombreux pays, des programmes ont été mis sur pied et réalisés, des financements importants ont été mobilisés. L'évaluation de ces politiques et de ces programmes soulève des questions scientifiques que les démographes se doivent d'examiner. Les premières Journées Scientifiques du Réseau Démographie de l'UREF ont été organisées sur ce thème à Bangui en juin 1993. Le présent ouvrage qui en est tiré constitue une contribution à la réflexion collective et à la sensibilisation de la communauté scientifique, des responsables politiques et des bailleurs de fonds sur cette question de l'évaluation. Les différents chapitres de cet ouvrage sont de deux types : exposés méthodologiques sans référence géographique particulière ou études de cas présentant un bon éventail de situations et de problèmes, notamment du point de vue géographique, même si le champ couvert est africain. En outre, alors que l'on réduit trop souvent les politiques et programmes de population à la seule planification familiale, d'autres aspects sont abordés ici : les politiques et programmes de santé, les migrations et l'urbanisation, l'information-éducation-communication et la planification de la population et du développement. Les approches sont variées et les éclairages complémentaires, les auteurs étant eux-mêmes de professions très diverses : chercheurs, enseignants, démographes travaillant dans des structures ministérielles ou dans des organismes d'intervention.
