With marriage in decline, divorce on the rise, the demise of the nuclear family, and the increase in marriages and adoptions among same-sex partners, it is clear that the structures of kinship in the modern West are in a state of flux. In The Metamorphoses of Kinship, the world-renowned anthropologist Maurice Godelier contextualizes these developments, surveying the accumulated experience of humanity with regard to such phenomena as the organization of lines of descent, sexuality and sexual prohibitions. In parallel, Godelier studies the evolution of Western conjugal and familial traditions from their roots in the nineteenth century to the present. The conclusion he draws is that it is never the case that a man and a woman are sufficient on their own to raise a child, and nowhere are relations of kinship or the family the keystone of society. Godelier argues that the changes of the last thirty years do not herald the disappearance or death agony of kinship, but rather its remarkable metamorphosis—one that, ironically, is bringing us closer to the “traditional” societies studied by ethnologists.

Cet ouvrage traite de l’histoire législative et sociale de l’adoption québécoise, en s’intéressant plus particulièrement aux adoptions intrafamiliales et à la manière dont l’adoption légale redéfinit juridiquement les liens familiaux de l’enfant adopté. Plus précisément, il aborde la question des places respectives de la famille d’origine et de la famille adoptive de l’enfant adopté au regard des droits qui s’y rattachent. La première partie retrace les changements successifs de la Loi sur l’adoption au Québec de 1924 jusqu’à la dernière réforme de 2018. Les États-providence sont aujourd'hui confrontés a trois exigences principales : garantir aux populations âgées des conditions de vie satisfaisantes sans alourdir les charges pesant sur les actifs, réduire les inégalités sociales et maintenir une équité entre générations successives. Une première partie de cet ouvrage est consacrée aux aspects théoriques du débat intergénérationnel : niveau " optimal " de la redistribution entre générations actives et inactives; organisation de l'activité au cours du cycle de vie; changements des comportements d'activité en France; âge optimal de la retraite. Les relations entre générations au sein des familles font l'objet d'une deuxième partie : évolution paradoxale de la législation au Québec; transformation du réseau familial des personnes âgées et de la solidarité en leur faveur aux Pays-Bas, en France et en Grande-Bretagne; entraide entre générations en Espagne permettant aux jeunes mères de rester sur le marché du travail.
