La experiencia americana de Alonso de Ercilla le inspiró su poema épico La Araucana, escrito en octavas reales y dividido en tres partes (1569, 1578 y 1589). La Araucana es uno de los libros que se salvan en el capítulo VI del Quijote. El primer texto poético europeo en el que América es un tema literario. Ercilla relata las cruentas luchas sostenidas en Chile entre araucanos y españoles, y describe el lugar y las costumbres de los indígenas. La narración impresiona por la precisa descripción de paisajes y batallas, y los certeros retratos de los jefes araucanos. Se intercalan digresiones, según un procedimiento habitual en la lírica culta. Se incluyen relatos de las batallas de Lepanto y San Quintín. Se describen ciudades famosas, la leyenda de Dido o una justificación política de las pretensiones de Felipe II a la corona portuguesa. Aunque Ercilla afirma ser testigo de las escenas que cuenta. El relato histórico muestra a menudo la influencia de las lecturas épicas del autor, con formación literaria. La obra tiene varios protagonistas, Lautaro y Caupolicán entre los indígenas araucanos. Mientras que son Pedro de Valdivia, García Hurtado de Mendoza, Pedro de Villagra o el propio Ercilla los personajes del lado español. Sin embargo, se da más relieve individual y heroico a los primeros, y se destacan sus virtudes por encima de sus adversarios. La obra fue escrita en tres entregas que se publicaron con diez años de diferencia cada una. Linkgua Ediciones ofrece al lector un volumen por cada una de la entregas. La segunda parte o entrega se inicia en 1543 y finaliza en 1557 y cubre la toma de Tucapel, hasta la muerte Lautaro, el líder mapuche que luchaba bajo las ordenes de Caupolicán.

La Araucana (1569, 1578 y 1589) es un poema épico del español Alonso de Ercilla que relata la primera fase de la Guerra de Arauco entre españoles y mapuches o araucanos.Según el propio autor, que participó en dicho conflicto, el poema fue escrito durante su estadía en Chile usando, a manera de papel, cortezas de árboles y otros elementos rústicos. Ercilla, quien como antiguo paje de la corte de Felipe II contaba con una educación mayor que la del promedio de los conquistadores, había llegado a dicho país como parte de la expedición de refuerzo comandada por el nuevo gobernador García Hurtado de Mendoza.

The Virgilian Tradition II brings together thirteen essays by historian Craig Kallendorf. The essays present a distinctive approach to the reception of the canonical classical author Virgil, that is focused around the early printed books through which that author was read and interpreted within early modern culture. Using the prefaces, dedicatory letters, and commentaries that accompanied the early modern editions of Virgil’s Eclogues, Georgics, Aeneid, and Appendix Virgiliana, they demonstrate how this paratextual material was used by early readers to develop a more nuanced interpretation of Virgil’s writings than twentieth-century scholars believed they were capable of. The approach developed throughout this volume shows how the emerging field of book history can enrich our understanding of the reception of Greek and Latin authors.
