La Argentina de aquel entonces era, como lo han afirmado autores argentinos y extranjeros, un país opulento. ¿Dónde está hoy aquel país? Al decir de Margaret Mitchell, "si queréis hallarlo, buscadlo en los libros de historia. Es una civilización que el viento se llevó". Tras intentos anteriores, en los que incluso abordaría comparaciones clásicas con otras experiencias nacionales, el autor retoma el tema del enigma o "misterio" argentino procurando llamar la atención sobre aspectos humanos, culturales, relacionales, internacionales, políticos, económicos y sociales que conforman una trama múltiple y lo hacen remontar a los orígenes formativos, el posterior aluvión inmigratorio, los logros y las transformaciones y convulsiones posteriores que concluyeron en una inocultable declinación, que hace tiempo no solo ha concitado la preocupación de propios, sino también, y en no pocos casos, de extraños "premios nobel, estudiosos, personalidades, literatos" que lo han registrado con expresiones aleccionadoras y también indelebles. Ello permite evocar un recorrido que conecte el arribo inicial y posterior de fragmentos o desprendimientos primariamente europeos, luego diversificados, y la evolución acaecida hasta una frustrante contemporaneidad, donde un pasado de inmigración ya ha conocido expresiones de lo opuesto.

During the mid-twentieth century, Latin American countries witnessed unprecedented struggles over the terms of national sovereignty, civic participation, and social justice. Nowhere was this more visible than in Peronist Argentina (1946-1955), where Juan and Eva Per—n led the region's largest populist movement in pursuit of new political hopes and material desires. Eduardo Elena considers this transformative moment from a fresh perspective by exploring the intersection of populism and mass consumption. He argues that Peronist actors redefined national citizenship around expansive promises of a vida digna (dignified life), which encompassed not only the satisfaction of basic wants, but also the integration of working Argentines into a modern consumer society. Drawing on documents such as the correspondence between Peronist sympathizers and authorities, Elena sheds light on the contest over the vida digna. He shows how the consumer aspirations of citizens overlapped with Peronist paradigms of state-led development, but not without generating great friction among allies and opposition from diverse sectors of society. Consumer practices encouraged intense public scrutiny of class and gender comportment, and everyday objects became charged with new cultural meaning. By providing important insights on why Peronism struck such a powerful chord, Dignifying Argentina situates Latin America within the broader history of citizenship and consumption at midcentury and provides innovative ways to understand the politics of redistribution in the region today.

This book challenges the wide-ranging generalizations that dominate the literature on the impact of export-led growth upon Latin America during the first export era. The contributors to this volume contest conventional approaches, stemming from structuralism and dependency theory, which portray a rather negative view of the impact of nineteenth-century globalization upon Latin America. It has been considered that, as a result of the role of Latin American countries as providers of raw materials produced in enclaves dominated by foreign capital, their participation in the world economy has had adverse consequences for their long-term development. This volume addresses a representative sample of countries with varied initial conditions and resource endowments, a diverse productive specialization, as well as different degrees of integration to the world economy. This allows a direct comparison among the different experiences within the region, which in turn enables a more nuanced understanding of the contribution of exports to economic growth and economic modernization. This book offers new topics and new perspectives on the economic history of Argentina before the 1930 Depression. It focuses on the evolution of early industrialization in a country primarily associated with cattle-ranching and agriculture, and single-mindedly characterized as a case of a successful export economy. Taking an original approach, the book cross-examines traditional economic issues such as production and finances, and new cultural patterns, such as consumption, the role of women, paternalism, and ideology. The first years of Argentina’s industrialization, from the 1870s to the 1920s, coincided with a time of great innovation, a brisk turn from tradition, and quick modernization. This book shows that industry not only helped Argentina’s economy along, but spearheaded its modernization. It challenges the long-lasting “canonical version” that industry was a victim of a capital market and a state extremely hostile to manufacturing. Access to financing for industrial endeavors was much easier than previously thought, while the state supported industry through tariffs.
