It is my hope that this publication of a "lost" work by Galiani will interest scholars of many nations and disciplines. Few writers could make a more compelling claim upon such a cosmopolitan audience. An Italian with deep roots in his homeland, Galiani achieved celebrity in the salons of Paris. An ecclesiastic, his most notable concerns were worldly, to say the least. An erudite classicist, Galiani was passionately concerned about economics and technology. A philosophe and ostensibly something of a subversive, he was enthralled by power and he served for many years as a government agent and adviser at home and abroad. Galiani embodied many of the preoccupations and paradoxes of the Enlightenment. His torians and literary analysts devoted to the study of the lumie'res through out Europe are bound to find Galiani's work important. In recent years there has been an efflorescence of interest in the history of political economy and its relationship not only to the history of ideas but also to the history of social structure, economic development, admin istrative institutions, collective mentalities, and political mobilization. Galiani's work helps to crystalize many of these connections which scholarly specialization has tended to obscure. Galiani had a leading voice in one of the most significant debates in the eighteenth century on the implications of radical economic, social, and institutional change.

Over the past few decades the music of the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) has enjoyed a slow but steady rise in popularity, and his six symphonies, written between 1942 and 1953, have now been recorded many times; concert performances are on the increase, too. African Political Activism in Postcolonial France engages with several areas of scholarly inquiry, ranging from the study of immigrants to the investigation of surveillance and the legacy of colonialism. Within migration studies, many important analyses have focused on integration, yielding critical contributions to our understanding of immigration and identity. This work moves in a different direction. Factoring in the dynamics of colonialism, decolonization, and their effect on immigrant political activism and state policy in the postcolonial, Cold War era reveals that immigrants from francophone Sub-Saharan Africa were key players who shaped the development of public policy toward immigrants. Monografie je prvním svazkem připravované edice zabývající se korespondencí českého hudebního skladatele Bohuslava Martinů s jeho rodinou v Poličce. Tento svazek obsahuje 61 nejstarších korespondenčních dokumentů (dopisy, pohlednice a telegram) z období od jeho studentských let na pražské konzervatoři v letech 1906–1910 až po konec roku 1931. Jedná se o korespondenci jednostrannou, dochovaly se pouze dopisy Bohuslava Martinů adresované rodině, obdržené dopisy skladatel vzhledem k velkému rozsahu své korespondence nearchivoval. I přesto lze v těchto dokumentech nacházet unikátní autentická sdělení, v nichž sám Martinů komentuje svou životní i profesní cestu. Dopisy jsou představeny v podobě diplomatického přepisu a doplněny poznámkovým aparátem. The monograph is the first volume in a new series that will encompass the correspondence of the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů with his family in Polička. This volume contains 61 of the oldest items of correspondence (letters, postcards, and one telegram) from the time of his studies at the Prague Conservatoire in 1906–1910 until the end of 1931. The correspondence is one-sided as only letters sent by Bohuslav Martinů to his family were preserved; the composer did not keep the letters he received from his family due to the large volume of his correspondence overall. Even so, these documents are unique and authentic expressions, in which Martinů remarks on both his personal and his professional life. The Czech version provides an exact diplomatic transcription of Martinů’s manuscript.
