Tras la expansión de las redes de ordenadores y la difusión de del uso Internet, está apareciendo un nuevo concepto de biblioteca: la biblioteca digital. Sus fondos estarán constituidos por libros, revistas y otros materiales digitales como la música, la imagen fija y en movimiento o vídeo; sus depósitos serán las memorias electrónicas de los ordenadores dedicados a ese fin; el acceso a las obras en texto completo será remoto y posible desde cualquier ordenador conectado a la red. Se trata, pues, de una biblioteca sin paredes y sin estanterías y accesible desde cualquier parte del globo. La puesta en funcionamiento de una biblioteca de tales características será un proceso lento y, aunque ya están siendo abordados, requerirá la resolución de forma eficiente de problemas técnicos informáticos (que afectan a los sistemas y a las redes), de edición electrónica (para hacer atractiva y manejable la representación digital y su visualización) y relacionados con su proceso técnico. Estos últimos, análogos a los realizados con los materiales bibliográficos convencionales si bien adaptados al nuevo entorno, incluyen la selección y reconversión de las publicaciones a digitalizar, la catalogación y clasificación de, los materiales electrónicos y la interfaz con el usuario que haga fácil y amigable la búsqueda de información y su posterior lectura y tratamiento. A estos problemas hay que añadir las cuestiones legales relativas a la propiedad intelectual, deposito legal y disponibilidad universal de las publicaciones así como las vinculadas con la comprensión y aceptación de la nueva situación sin olvidar las técnicas necesarias para garantizar la seguridad y autenticidad de los documentos digitales.

This work in the field of digital literary stylistics and computational literary studies is concerned with theoretical concerns of literary genre, with the design of a corpus of nineteenth-century Spanish-American novels, and with its empirical analysis in terms of subgenres of the novel. The digital text corpus consists of 256 Argentine, Cuban, and Mexican novels from the period between 1830 and 1910. It has been created with the goal to analyze thematic subgenres and literary currents that were represented in numerous novels in the nineteenth century by means of computational text categorization methods. To categorize the texts, statistical classification and a family resemblance analysis relying on network analysis are used with the aim to examine how the subgenres, which are understood as communicative, conventional phenomena, can be captured on the stylistic, textual level of the novels that participate in them.

How many cassette tapes do you still own? In one hundred years, how many TikTok videos or Instagram posts will still be accessible? Yet much of today's news and mass culture is produced and disseminated via transient means. Just as in previous eras. Hispanic popular cultures of previous centuries, once intended for a broad audience, can now only be glimpsed in fragile, and frequently overlooked, media such as chapbooks, newspapers, journals and early sound recordings. This bilingual collection explores aspects of the ephemeral cultures of Spain and Latin America between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries, taking advantage of the recent digital turn in the humanities. The first section examines the varied audiences for mass literature in Spain and the authorities' attempts to censor and control it. The second looks at pliegos sueltos, songbooks and collections of popular poetry in Argentina, Mexico and Chile. The third section concentrates on questions of performance, studying placards which originally accompanied oral readings of pliegos sueltos, news ballads and zarzuelas. The volume concludes with a focus on three case studies: the travels of an eighteenth-century giant and the reception of his self-fashioning in Spain, the diffusion of the works of a Spanish pulp novelist in Portugal and Brazil and the revival of a Peruvian festival of popular music in the early twentieth century. Throughout, the chapters show how the increasing digitisation of library and archival collections has enabled much of this ephemeral material to be 'discovered', analysed and compared, leading to new understandings of how popular culture developed and migrated and, indeed, what is meant by 'popular'.
