Ante todo, quiero transmitir un mensaje simple en una narración divulgativa, evitando, en lo posible, el lenguaje técnico, pero con las explicaciones del caso. Se incluyen las referencias respectivas de fuentes primarias, datos y cifras, y otros recursos. Se trata de una invitación al lector como individuo a que profundice en el conocimiento sobre la biodiversidad. No es una queja o un regaño, menos un manual sobre la institucionalidad y gobernabilidad de la biodiversidad —aunque se nombra algo sobre esto— más bien, es una invitación a reflexionar sobre el tema y, ojalá, a cambiar de actitud. Aunque no es un libro dirigido solo a los colombianos, sería importante que lo conozcan. La mayoría de los libros sobre ambiente y biodiversidad son escritos desde un enfoque terrestre. Al ser biólogo marino, mi enfoque es diferente: el agua, la cual es transversal en todas sus dimensiones; en Colombia, además, la apreciación de la biodiversidad es muy completa. El país, ubicado en el trópico húmedo,es posiblemente el segundo más biodiverso del mundo —de seguro el de mayor biodiversidad por kilómetro cuadrado— donde se sueña con el desarrollo. ¿Cómo percibimos los colombianos la biodiversidad?

La rápida e inminente pérdida de recursos biológicos es actualmente una de las mayores preocupaciones a nivel global; por esta razón ha dejado de ser un tema exclusivo de biólogos y ecólogos para convertirse en una problemática que debe ser manejada desde las diferentes áreas del conocimiento. La diversidad biológica constituye un aspecto fundamental del quehacer de todo profesional, que a diario debe tomar decisiones que, de una manera u otra, están relacionadas con la biodiversidad, más aún en un país como Colombia con una posición biogeográfica especial, donde los endemismos biológicos, la diversidad de recursos genéticos y la multiplicidad de ecosistemas le dan el calificativo de ser uno de los países megadiversos del planeta. Los conceptos sobre biodiversidad forman, hoy en día, parte de todo discurso relacionado con el desarrollo de la humanidad, como la formulación de legislación que proteja los recursos biológicos y que a su vez permita su adecuado aprovechamiento en términos económicos, o la preservación de ecosistemas cuando esto compite con grandes proyectos de desarrollo tecnológico o su incorporación a proyectos urbanísticos y de recreación.
