The Appian Way was the first great artery from Rome to southern Italy and the model for all roads originating in the ancient capital. Conceived by Appius Claudius in 312 B.C., the thoroughfare provided easy access to Capua, the most important junction in southern Italy, and facilitated Roman expansion into the southern peninsula. Paved in black basalt, the road was flanked by level pedestrian footpaths and bordered by tombs, villas, and pleasant rest and refreshment areas along its 365 miles, which could be walked in thirteen to fourteen days. The Ancient Appian Way provides an engaging account of the Appian Way's origins and historical context. The structure of this lavishly illustrated book mirrors the traveler's route south from Rome, making it an ideal guide to the legendary road for all those with an interest in exploring ancient Rome.

Pride In Modesty written by Michelangelo Sabatino and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-05-21 with Architecture categories.

Following Italy's unification in 1861, architects, artists, politicians, and literati engaged in volatile debates over the pursuit of national and regional identity. Growing industrialization and urbanization across the country contrasted with the rediscovery of traditionally built forms and objects created by the agrarian peasantry. Pride in Modesty argues that these ordinary, often anonymous, everyday things inspired and transformed Italian art and architecture from the 1920s through the 1970s. Through in-depth examinations of texts, drawings, and buildings, Michelangelo Sabatino finds that the folk traditions of the pre-industrial countryside have provided formal, practical, and poetic inspiration directly affecting both design and construction practices over a period of sixty years and a number of different political regimes. This surprising continuity allows Sabatino to reject the division of Italian history into sharply delimited periods such as Fascist Interwar and Democratic Postwar and to instead emphasize the long, continuous process that transformed pastoral and urban ideals into a new, modernist Italy.

Regarding Romantic Rome written by Richard Wrigley and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Art categories.

This volume brings together a collection of essays that explore the cultural history and representation of Rome from the late eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century. The essays address diverse aspects of Rome as a subject and site of Romantic experience and commentary, investigating the legacy of the Grand Tour, and the changing face of Rome in the early nineteenth century. The contributions range across various media, genres, and topics - the Roman art market, paintings of contemporary Romans and their interpretation, music in and 'of' Rome, the evolution of nineteenth-century guidebooks, novels which take Rome as their narrative mise-en-scène, the idea of Rome as a setting for creative activity, ruins as polysemic metaphor, women and the reception of antiquity, the aesthetics of urban hygiene, and the mythology of that renowned quarter of Rome, Trastevere. In different ways, all of the contributions to this volume contribute to our understanding of the relationship between Rome's changing identity and the evolving forms of literary and artistic representation employed to record, evoke, commemorate, or make sense of the city, its people, and landscape.
