Excerpt from La Canne de Jonc Count Alfred de Vigny was born at Loches, in La Beauce, district of Touraine, in 1797. His family was one of the best in that part of the country, though for several generations they had played no part in public life. His father, a younger son, served with distinction in the Seven Years' War. Like most of the ancienne noblesse he had an intense personal devotion to the Bourbons, which he did his best to communicate to his son. Being an excellent story - teller, he never tired of recounting to him the glories of the days before the Revolution, as well as his experiences of the wars with Frederick the Great, who seems to have impressed the French officers who served against him almost as much as he was himself impressed by French men of letters.
