La colección cartográfica de la Real Academia de la Historia es una de las más ricas de España, tanto por la cantidad como por la variedad y calidad de sus ejemplares y la Academia ha puesto el mayor cuidado en su conservación, descripción y difusión. Así sucede con esta Selección de Cartografía Histórica, compuesta por 329 mapas, de los que treinta son manuscritos y ofrecen una excelente selección de tema americano. Incluye también más de cincuenta cartas náuticas de costas americanas, españolas y atlánticas, un centenar de mapas generales o parciales de España y Portugal de los siglos XVIII y XIX, entre los que destacan muchos relativos a itinerarios, ferrocarriles y otras vías de comunicación, y otro centenar de mapas y planos históricos tanto de ámbito hispánico como europeo, marroquí y del Próximo Oriente otomano, relativos, en su mayoría, a sucesos del siglo XIX y comienzos del XX. Es, en resumen, un conjunto de gran interés, variado pero con algunos núcleos temáticos principales. Esta Selección tendrá un valor permanente para historiadores de diversas especialidades y proporcionará a otros muchos lectores la satisfacción intelectual que produce viajar imaginariamente sobre el mapa, porque bien se dice que “una imagen vale más que mil palabras” y más si, como es el caso, cada imagen va acompañada por las “mil palabras” de una cuidadosa catalogación.
