La otra lectura llena un espacio escasamente abordado en nuestro pais. Esa B"otra lecturaB" en los libros para ninos y jovenes habla de la imagen, de la imagen y el texto y de ambas como un todo. El lugar del ilustrador de libros para chicos, como dice el propio Istvan fue y sigue siendo en algunos casos subvalorado, cuando no excluido. Su ojo lleva al lector a B"aprender a mirarB": desde los paratextos de un libro, hasta las tecnicas utilizadas en las ilustraciones, pasando por un profundo analisis de distintas imagenes de autores e ilustradores argentinos y universales, con total objetividad. Se detiene especialmente en la palabra B"autorB," ya que considera que crear ilustraciones es una B"autoriaB," como la del escritor. Se regocija en la investigacion de las imagenes incluidas en el libro, dando lugar al lector al aprendizaje de esa otra lectura, a veces simple y a veces miniaturista: la importancia de la tipografia, por ejemplo, deja entrever que un libro es un todo donde no escapa siquiera el tamano y la forma de las letras. Incursiona en el tratamiento que la escuela deberia accionar para B"leerB" un libro ilustrado, teniendo en cuenta la desinformacion de los adultos sobre la ilustracion en los libros para ninos. En particular se dirige a los docentes de grado, al docente de plastica y al de lengua y literatura. Y como si esto fuera poco, el libro contiene un pliego color para que el lector recorte B"figuritasB" y las pegue dentro del libro tal como se menciona en la introduccion.

Esta publicación recoge las ponencias plenarias y las comunicaciones presentadas y leídas en el VII Simposio Internacional de la SEDLL, que con el título Canon, literatura infantil y juvenil y otras literaturas, fue asumido por la Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha y se celebró en Ciudad Real, en diciembre de 2001. Aparecen aquí recogidas también las actividades relacionadas con los estudios mencionadas arriba: talleres y seminarios que suscitaron provechosas discusiones, sugerencias y debates. Como dice Alfredo Rodríguez López-Vázquez en la Presentación: La celebración del VII Simposio con su doble concreción en el título, del objeto de estudio, y de su relación con el canon, ha venido a representar un hito importante. Este Simposio pretendía, ya desde su diseño por parte del Comité Científico, un nuevo planteamiento de orientaciones críticas y metodológicas en el ámbito de la educación y de la investigación en torno a la literatura que leen los niños y los jóvenes de hoy en día en el contexto de la sociedad tecnológica moderna.
