Il lavoro intende ripercorrere le tappe salienti dell’itinerario storico-giuridico che ha visto protagonisti la Chiesa da una parte e lo Stato dal- l’altra. Non può essere dimenticato, infatti, che il presupposto dogmatico dualista del potere spirituale distinto da quello terreno, sin dai primi albori, è caratterizzato dal costante e reciproco mo- do nel quale entrambi i poteri si sono vicendevolmente lasciati influenzare pur restando gelosi ognuno delle distinte finalità alle quali mirano. Comprenderemo però che pur nel rispetto delle singole competenze, per i due potentati né teologicamente, né giuridicamente e neppure praticamente è ammissibile un sistema negativo di reciproca ignoranza e separazione, a nulla valendo le lotte che si sono avute proprio per acclarare questa distinzione.
