This book asks how thinking, governing, performing, and producing the urban differently can assist in enabling the creation of alternative urban futures. This book explores the topic of proximity and its relations in the design of contemporary urban fabrics and public spaces. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and reflections on the future of cities have lately shed light on the concept of proximity, which is intended as the relationship between communities and urban functions and as relations among people, built spaces, and open spaces. The proximity is a historic and fertile field of interest for American and Northern European urban studies; it is a spatial and social program seemingly surpassed by the styles and rhythms of contemporary city life, but today it is back in vogue with different purposes. Meanwhile, the action research developed by the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies at the Politecnico di Milano for the Municipality of Milan reached its conclusion (2018–2020). The research work focused on contextualizing the new M4 Metro line stations under construction, and jointed mobility flows and places, long-range networks and local ones, boosting the idea of metro stations as regenerative urban thresholds and urban platforms for enabling environmental, sustainable settlement, and active mobility systems. In other words, the action research for Milan shows how to achieve the concept of proximity in the urban design practice in a dense, stratified, and complex urban context.

Il volume pubblica i materiali raccolti in occasione della giornata di studi PICS Città Pubblica/Paesaggi Comuni, organizzata dal gruppo di ricerca LUS-Living Urban Scape dell'Università Roma Tre, il 27 giugno 2013. LUS è un progetto di ricerca nazionale che si propone di esplorare forme di progetto e di azione per la rigenerazione degli spazi aperti negli insediamenti di edilizia residenziale pubblica. Finanziato nel 2011 dal Ministero dell'Università e della Ricerca (MIUR) tramite un bando FIRB per giovani ricercatori, è condotto da un gruppo interdisciplinare di paesaggisti, urbanisti, architetti e sociologi nelle sedi di Roma Tre e dello IUAV di Venezia. Il libro si articola in tre sezioni: Strumenti, Esperienze e Temi. Strumenti ospita le riflessioni di alcuni degli autori invitati a partecipare ai lavori della giornata di colloqui: Sguardi, Programmi e Azioni sono le tracce tematiche che guidano le loro considerazioni e che rinviano, nelle intenzioni delle curatrici, alla possibilità di identificare alcune categorie di sintesi interpretativa, in una prospettiva di indirizzo operativo. Esperienze raccoglie i testi arrivati attraverso la call del convegno, con il proposito di restituire in parte la ricchezza di un territorio multidisciplinare di ricerca ben consolidato quanto eterogeneo. Questo libro intende rimettere al centro dell’attenzione delle politiche territoriali e del progetto urbanistico il tema della qualità ecologica delle coste, intese come infrastrutture ambientali e di servizio per la rigenerazione dei contesti territoriali. Le coste sono geografie mobili e fragili il cui stato di salute appare sempre più minacciato dagli effetti pervasivi della pressione antropica e delle crisi congiunturali in atto. Nel nostro paese, oltre il 30% della popolazione nazionale vive in aree costiere; le città sul mare occupano il 13% del territorio nazionale; la densità di urbanizzazione nei cinquecento metri dalla linea della battigia è pari a cinque volte la media nazionale. L’effetto antropico produce ricadute negative sugli equilibri ambientali dei sistemi costieri, determinando un decremento della qualità dei servizi eco-sistemici necessari alla vita degli organismi, compresa quella degli uomini. I cambiamenti climatici hanno accentuato le dinamiche di innalzamento delle maree, di ingressione marina, di subsidenza ed erosione, d’inquinamento dell’aria e dell’acqua. I contributi raccolti in questo volume affermano la necessità che i piani, i progetti e le governance territoriali riscattino gli approcci correnti – settoriali e frammentari – e pongano al centro dell’attenzione i temi della vulnerabilità e della sicurezza ambientale come materiali di un ampio programma progettuale, integrato e transcalare. È necessario confrontarsi con le prospettive di rigenerazione ecologica e sociale dei contesti urbani e territoriali, con politiche per la mobilità, il risparmio energetico, la salute ecosistemica del suolo, la qualità dei servizi collettivi, la riduzione della vulnerabilità ambientale e sociale dei tessuti interessati dai programmi d’intervento. Si tratta, inoltre, di attraversare e descrivere le coste: far emergere la loro complessità e il loro spessore ecologico. In quest’ultima prospettiva, il libro raccoglie un interessante atlante di scatti fotografici che hanno partecipato al concorso Erosioni, bandito da Legambiente e dall’Osservatorio paesaggi costieri italiani nel luglio 2020.
