La commedia dell’arte a Catalunya aplega diverses manifestacions d’aquest macocrosmos icònic en la cultura i el teatre i catalans, des del segle XVI fins als nostres dies. David George i Jordi Lladó tenen una llarga trajectòria en l’estudi d’aquest fenomen en l’escena i la literatura catalana i hispànica del segle xx i han ampliat la seua recerca tenint en compte tant l’origen popular del gènere teatral a Itàlia, com la seva particular adaptació a França amb nous gèneres com la pantomima commediesca, de gran ressò a l’escena barcelonina del tombant del segle xix. El volum incideix en el caràcter híbrid i interdisciplinari del gènere, tant en el diàleg que estableix entre formes parateatrals populars i art cultivat com en la confluència d’interès des de les arts plàstiques i les arts del moviment: cobra així una especial atenció l’aspecte visual i plàstic del fenomen. Es presta l’atenció deguda als autors i artistes més significats per la seva fascinació commediesca, com Ferran de Segarra, la companyia Onofri, Emmanuel Alfonso, Tórtola Valencia, Adrià Gual, Apel·les Mestres, Joan Magrinyà, Joan Brossa o Joan Ponç, sempre a l’entorn del triangle figural de referència (Arlequí, Pierrot i Colombina). El llibre també contempla la importància de la commedia dell’arte com a matèria pedagògica al país, empresa per Adrià Gual des de 1913 en paral·lel amb altres creadors europeus contemporanis, en una continuïtat que ha arribat als nostres dies amb la incorporació de l’assignatura en els plans d’estudi de l’Institut del Teatre de Barcelona.

This volume presents studies of some of the key artistic manifestations in Catalonia in recent times, a period of innovation and experimentation, and addresses issues concerning literature, film, theatre and performance art. From the creation of a new popular theatre in the work of the Valencian playwright Rodolf Sirera, or the conception of landscape, myth and memory in the late work of the novelist Mercè Rodoreda and the urgency of memory and remembrance in the writings of Jordi Coca, the effects of censorship in Catalonia appear to have proved a spur and a challenge to writers. Desiring to occupy illegal spaces, performance groups have manifested both literally and metaphorically the international dimension of Catalan culture in the modern period, posed in the present volume by the instances of La Cubana and Els Joglars, and further evidenced in the cross-fertilization in the work of contemporary Catalan playwrights and filmmakers to foreground issues of national plurality and tensions arising between the periphery (Catalonia) and the centre (Spain and Castile).

The rehearsal processes of theatre companies are an oft-neglected area of research in Drama and Performance Studies. This work on the Catalan devising collective Els Joglars and the Madrid producing venue Teatro de la Abad a seeks to redress the balance with a close analysis of methodologies employed in rehearsal. In effect, both companies have created distinctive rehearsal processes by applying ideas and techniques from a wider European context to a Spanish theatre scene which had been seen to follow rather than develop trends and techniques visible in theatre across France, Italy and Germany. Critically, their hybrid rehearsal processes generate heightened theatrical results for the audience. Thus the book shifts the focus of academic study away from product and towards process, demonstrating how an understanding of process assists in the reading of the theatrical product. Simon David Breden obtained a PhD in Drama & Hispanic Studies from Queen Mary, University of London. He has worked as a professional director and expert in Spanish theatre in London and Madrid.
