Engaging with recent thinking about performance, political theory and canon formation, this study addresses the significance of the formal changes in seventeenth-century French theater. Each chapter takes up a particularity of seventeenth-century theatrical style and staging”for example, the clearing of violence from the stage”and shows how the conceptualization of these French stylistic shifts appropriates a rich body of Italian political writing on questions of action, temporality, and law. The theater's appropriation of political concerns and vocabularies, the author argues, proffers an astute reflection on the practices of government that draws attention to questions obscured in reason of state, such as the instrumentalization of women's bodies. In a new reading of tragedies about government, the author shows how the canonical figure of Pierre Corneille is formally engaged with the political strategizing he often appears to repudiate, and in so doing challenges a literary history that has read neoclassicism largely as a display of pure French style.

During his long and productive academic career Tony Peters led many struggles for criminal justice reform. He was a leading figure in the movement to recognize crime victims' plight and to reaffirm their rights. In Belgium, he spearheaded the early initiatives in restorative justice and became one of its outspoken proponents nationally and internationally. There is no doubt that these three major topics and the various developments and reforms that are addressed in the papers will dominate the thinking about, and the practice of, criminal justice in the years to come. Quand allons-nous dire "c'est assez !" à tout ce qui est nuisible et toxique à la vie ? Quand allons-nous réaliser que nous sommes ici pour savourer la paix et la félicité suprême du Divin, les partager avec tous les êtres vivants au-delà de tous clivages ? Nous avons quelque chose de bien - le Paradis est déjà en nous. Le Paradis apparaîtra sur la terre à la mesure de notre détermination à vouloir le vivre maintenant à travers nos esprits, nos coeurs et nos actions. C'est en vivant de plus en plus en synchronicité avec la vie qui est compassion que le Paradis se manifestera. La Fraternité Universelle apparaîtra sur terre lorsqu'un plus grand nombre le désirera et agira pour le bien de tous. Le Paradis où la création d'une Fraternité Universelle est le plus grand cadeau que la vie nous offre !
