Oggi purtroppo la storia non è più al centro delle passioni e degli interessi dei giovani, perché non appare in grado di dare risposte sicure ai problemi morali ed esistenziali che essi avvertono di fronte alle angosce e alle speranze della contemporaneità in cui sono immersi. La storia, invece, assieme alla scuola che la propone come oggetto di studio, può certamente fornire ancora un aiuto: quello di non proporre, anzi di contrastare, qualsiasi forma di reductio ad unum, che è la matrice di ogni fondamentalismo. Forse sta qui la specificità del suo valore didattico, al fine della formazione non solo di persone istruite ma di futuri cittadini coscienti. Spiegare cos’è la storia è difficile, ma autorevoli studiosi hanno dato, secondo la loro esperienza una risposta. La storia è ad ogni modo una forma di conoscenza che si raggiunge costruendo un legame col passato e che serve a conoscere e a muoversi nel mondo presente [...]. Questo libro nasce dalla diretta esperienza di insegnamento nella scuola superiore ed è destinato naturalmente alla didattica e gli obiettivi sono principalmente tre: quello di insegnare agli studenti i fondamenti della disciplina, di dare agli studenti gli strumenti per poter comprendere l’importanza e la differenza tra la storia-materia, preconfezionata, e il fare storia-scienza, ricerca, naturalmente mettendo in evidenza la scientificità della metodologia storica, e, infine, «risvegliare gli spiriti più pensosi da un incosciente o cosciente sonno».

Reappraisal of the pioneering humanist scholar Biondo Flavio During his lifetime the historian and antiquarian Biondo Flavio (1392– 1463) struggled to obtain recognition as a major contributor to the humanistic movement of the fifteenth century. Throughout the Renaissance, fellow Italian scholars far too often condemned rather than endorsed his scholarly works.
