Tradicionalmente se ha entendido que en España la invención de la fotografía no generó debates interesantes, y que, si hubo alguno, estos fueron forzosamente miméticos a los franceses, por lo que apenas tendrían un interés específico. Este libro precisamente quiere demostrar lo contrario. Existió en la España decimonónica una enorme atención por el significado social, cultural y tecnológico de la Fotografía. Pero las reacciones que motivó y que fueron publicadas en diferentes medios de prensa y en algunos libros, no hay que buscarlas solo entre los fotógrafos, que bastante tenían con encontrar nichos de desarrollo a una tecnología que necesitaba ubicar sus utilidades en el marco de una sociedad sometida a lentos pero intensos cambios respecto al pasado. When Spanish photographer Cristina Garcia Rodero went to study art in Italy, in 1973, she fully understood the importance of home. Yet her time abroad formented a deeper interest in was happening in her own country and, as a result, at the age of 23, Garcia Rodero returned to Spain and started a project that she hoped would capture the essence of the myriad Spanish traditions, religious practices and rites that were already fading away. What started as a five-year project ended up lasting 15 years and came to be the book España Oculta(Hidden Spain) published in 1989. At 39 years old, Garcia Rodero had managed to compile a kind of anthropological encyclopedia of her country. The work also captured a key moment in Spain’s history – with Spanish dictator Franco dying in 1975, and the country commencing a period of transition – something that would come to have a huge effect on the way the nation’s cultural traditions and rites were experienced and performed from then on.

In an 1828 letter to his partner, Nicéphore Niépce, Louis Daguerre wrote, "I am burning with desire to see your experiments from nature." In this book, Geoffrey Batchen analyzes the desire to photograph as it emerged within the philosophical and scientific milieus that preceded the actual invention of photography. Recent accounts of photography's identity tend to divide between the postmodern view that all identity is determined by context and a formalist effort to define the fundamental characteristics of photography as a medium. Batchen critiques both approaches by way of a detailed discussion of photography's conception in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He examines the output of the various nominees for "first photographer," then incorporates this information into a mode of historical criticism informed by the work of Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida. The result is a way of thinking about photography that persuasively accords with the medium's undeniable conceptual, political, and historical complexity.
