This is the first complete version in English of the "Book of the People" of the Quiche Maya, the most powerful nation of the Guatemalan highlands in pre-Conquest times and a branch of the ancient Maya, whose remarkable civilization in pre-Columbian America is in many ways comparable to the ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean. Generally regarded as America's oldest book, the Popol Vuh, in fact, corresponds to our Christian Bible, and it is, moreover, the most important of the five pieces of the great library treasures of the Maya that survived the Spanish Conquest. The Popol Vuh was first transcribed in the Quiche language, ·but in Latin characters, in the middle of the sixteenth century, by some unknown but highly literate Quiche Maya Indian-probably from the oral traditions of his people. This now lost manuscript was copied at the end of the seventeenth century by Father Francisco Ximénez, then parish priest of the village of Santo Tomás Chichicastenango in the highlands of Guatemala, today the most celebrated and best-known Indian town in all of Central America. The mythology, traditions, cosmogony, and history of the Quiché Maya, including the chronology of their kings down to 1550, are related in simple yet literary style by the Indian chronicler. And Adrian Recinos has made a valuable contribution to the understanding and enjoyment of the document through his thorough going introduction and his identification of places and people in the footnotes.

La intención de esta obra es "determinar" la naturaleza de Dios en su relación con el Universo, concretando y analizando los denominados atributos cósmicos de Dios. Trata, por tanto, del problema de Dios, pero orientado sólo en su relación con el Cosmos, prescindiendo explícita y radicalmente de su relación con el Hombre. Por relación de Dios con el Cosmos, se entiende "nuestro Universo", el Universo del que habla la física, el Universo que ha venido estudiando y observando la ciencia. Aquí se analiza el proceso histórico de progresivo conocimiento hasta la concepción hoy vigente. Es decir, el problema del Universo a lo largo de la historia humana desde la perspectiva propiamente científica. Para ello, se ofrece un estudio histórico aceptablemente pormenorizado de las conexiones, acuerdos y desacuerdos, entre la concepción de Dios, y la del Universo y de su posible relacionalidad. El conocimiento del Universo, es decir, de la Creación en versión religiosa, informa acerca de Dios, su creador, facilitando, modulando, la elaboración humana del concepto de Dios. Trata, pues, del problema de la relación Dios-Universo a lo largo de la historia humana, o, propiamente, de la teología de la Creación del Universo en su largo desarrollo histórico a la luz de los progresos científicos. En un Universo tan grande, en el que el planeta Tierra representa tan poco, tan poquísimo, y en un Universo tan antiguo y al que debe quedarle tanta vida, en el que la presencia del hombre es tan fugaz, tan corta, hay que replantearse la idea del propósito de Dios, y cobra especial relevancia en este contexto la tradicional quinta Sola de la tradición protestante: Soli Deo Gloria, para su gloria. El purgatorio es un lugar infinitamente desconocido; es prácticamente imposible encontrarse por la vida un santo como los muchos que presenta la autora en esta obra. El objetivo que se marca María Vallejo-Nágera con este libro no es despertar curiosidades insanas y mucho menos convencer al lector escéptico o de diferente religión a la católica de la existencia del mismo. Lo único que pretende es ayudar a comprender mejor lo que se sabe o se afirma sobre este tema desde el punto de vista católico, que es profundo y está muy trillado por la Iglesia desde sus comienzos allá por el siglo I. Hay muchas personas que aun siendo o considerándose católicas viven muy alejadas de practicar la fe. Quizá la razón haya que buscarla en la dificultad que pueden encontrar a la hora de intentar entender los misterios de Dios. Se trata de una ardua tarea que puede desesperar al investigador por no existir pruebas contundentes sobre la existencia del purgatorio, y al que con este libro se intenta dar respuesta.
