"La Crisi delle scienze europee" fu tradotta in italiano nel 1961 per iniziativa di Enzo Paci. Si tratta di una sorta di summa del pensiero del filosofo, che tuttavia ha particolari caratteristiche rispetto la sua produzione complessiva. Titolo e forma di queste conversazioni sono state scelte per evitare la pretesa di sistematicità e per poter esprimere con la massima libertà giudizi sia sull'opera stessa e sia sui modi della sua ricezione . Ne risulta un'esposizione che rende conto delle tematiche interne ritenute più rilevanti, realizzando una lettura dell'opera che mira a localizzarla storicamente, nella tragedia delle due guerre mondiali e dell'ascesa del fascismo e del nazismo. L'autore compie significative digressionicoinvolgendo, talora con necessaria durezza, letture e interpretazioni recenti. Ne risulta una sollecitazione molto netta ad una revisione dei modi in cui la storiografia ha descritta la vicenda della filosofia italiana nella seconda metà del secolo scorso.

Inoltre il testo indaga sulla sempre attuale questione della crisi della filosofia come scienza iniziata con Galileo Galilei e 'corretta' per la prima volta da Cartesio.Come previsto dalla collana, il volume è suddiviso in capitoli dedicati alla genesi, poi alla struttura e alla vera e propria analisi articolata dell'opera e alla sua fortuna, ed è corredato di una bibliografia completa. In questa edizione compaiono anche i testi integrativi (Dissertazioni e Appendici) posti dal curatore della prima edizione tedesca, in chiusura dell'opera: questi testi vi figurano dunque non per volontà diretta di Husserl ma per una scelta editoriale del curatore, che ha ritenuto opportuno integrare l'opera con una serie di brani che, per cronologia e omogeneità tematica, sono riferibili al periodo di composizione della Crisi e attribuibili univocamente a specifici passi di essa. Un capitolo poi è dedicato alla fortuna avuta dal volume, le tante edizioni commentate a partire da quella di Enzo Paci in Italia e Jacques Derrida in Francia, i due più importanti lettori dell'opera di Husserl.

In questo libro, frutto di una ricerca promossa dall'Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici di Napoli, il metodo fenomenologico di Edmund Husserl viene applicato all'Europa in quanto dimensione culturale e spirituale. Analizzando le riflessioni husserliane sulla crisi delle scienze e sul destino della civiltà europea, l'autore traccia un percorso ermeneutico che oltrepassa il piano ricostruttivo per approdare a una riflessione sull'Europa futura. Ne scaturisce un doppio esito: da un lato, una verifica delle capacità del pensiero fenomenologico di interpretare in chiave critica la realtà europea attuale; dall'altro, un abbozzo dei compiti più urgenti che, da questa prospettiva fenomenologica, l'Europa si trova a dover affrontare.

The Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology, Husserl's last great work, is important both for its content and for the influence it has had on other philosophers. In this book, which remained unfinished at his death, Husserl attempts to forge a union between phenomenology and existentialism. Husserl provides not only a history of philosophy but a philosophy of history. As he says in Part I, "The genuine spiritual struggles of European humanity as such take the form of struggles between the philosophies, that is, between the skeptical philosophies--or nonphilosophies, which retain the word but not the task--and the actual and still vital philosophies. But the vitality of the latter consists in the fact that they are struggling for their true and genuine meaning and thus for the meaning of a genuine humanity."
