Le premier tome de cette histoire a paru en 1989 pour souligner le 350e anniversaire de l'arrivée des Augustins à Québec et de l'ouverture de leur hôpital, Hôtel-Dieu. Il a retracé l'histoire de ses femmes et de leur établissement de soins depuis leur modeste début, dans une colonie encore peu peuplée, jusqu'à la fin du XIXe siècle. À l'hôpital des corps et des âmes (1639-1825) a succédé une institution en transition où les progrès de la médicalisation et l'insertion dans le processus de formation des médecins annoncent l'hôpital moderne (1825-1892). Le second tome reprend le récit en 1892. Les Augustins viennent tout juste d'agrandir leur établissement en tenant compte des derniers développements de la science. Il s'agit d'un événement symbolique capital et les journalistes du temps ne s'y sont pas trompés en décrivant le nouvel immeuble dans des termes dithyrambiques. En fait, l'hôpital moderne tel que nous le concevons encore aujourd'hui vient de naître. Il s'affirmera comme producteur de soins et comme instrument indispensable au développement économique et social de la collectivité. Après 1930, il sera le lieu d'un colossal effort d'institutionnalisation et de normalisation à l'échelle nord-américaine, si bien que les réformes de la Révolution tranquille apparaîtront à plusieurs égards comme le prolongement du virage amorcé au tournant du siècle. Cette histoire est également celle des Augustins, de leur recrutement, de leur vie communautaire et des profonds changements qu'elles ont vécus lors du concile de Vaticai II et de la Révolution tranquille. Au-delà de leurs difficultés actuelles ? crise des vocations et vieillissement de l'effectif ?, il faut surtout retenir que ces femmes, attentives aux besoins exprimés par la société et profondément engagées envers leurs malades, n'ont pas hésité à faire de leurs hôpitaux une voies d'accès les plus précoces du Québec à la modernité. François Rousseau a consacré l'essentiel de sa carrière d'historien à l'exploration de l'univers de la santé. Publiée en 1983, sa thèse de doctorat, sur le régime des malades à l'Hôtel-Dieu, lui a valu la médaille Luc-Lacoursière et le prix Michel-Brunet, qui récompense le meilleur ouvrage produit par un jeune historien québécois.

Marie-André Duplessis (1687-1760) guided the Augustinian sisters at the Hôtel-Dieu of Quebec - the oldest hospital north of Mexico - where she was elected mother superior six times. Although often overshadowed by colonial nuns who became foundresses or saints, she was a powerhouse during the last decades of the French regime and an accomplished woman of letters. She has been credited with Canada’s first literary narrative, Canada’s first music manual, and the first book by a Canadian woman printed during her own lifetime. In A Touch of Fire, the first biography of Duplessis, Thomas Carr analyzes how she navigated, in peace and war, the unstable, male-dominated colonial world of New France. Through a study of Duplessis's correspondence, her writings, and the rich Hôtel-Dieu archives, Carr details how she channelled the fire of her commitment to the hospital in order to advance its interests, preserve its history, and inspire her sister nuns. Duplessis chronicled New France as she wrote for and about her institution. Her administrative correspondence reveals her managerial successes and failures, and her private letters reshaped her friendship with a childhood Jansenist friend, Marie-Catherine Hecquet. An exploration of early modern accounts of sickness and disability—and what they tell us about our own approach to bodily difference In our age of biomedicine, society often treats sickness and disability as problems in need of solution. Phenomena of embodied difference, however, have not always been seen in terms of lack and loss. Where Paralytics Walk and the Blind See explores the case of early modern Catholic Canada under French rule and shows it to be a period rich with alternative understandings of infirmity, disease, and death. Counternarratives to our contemporary assumptions, these early modern stories invite us to creatively imagine ways of living meaningfully with embodied difference today. At the heart of Dunn’s account are a range of historical sources: Jesuit stories of illness in New France, an account of Canada’s first hospital, the hagiographic vita of Catherine de Saint-Augustin, and tales of miraculous healings wrought by a dead Franciscan friar. In an early modern world that subscribed to a Christian view of salvation, both sickness and disability held significance for more than the body, opening opportunities for virtue, charity, and even redemption. Dunn demonstrates that when these reflections collide with modern thinking, the effect is a certain kind of freedom to reimagine what sickness and disability might mean to us. It is virtually impossible to generalize about the degree to which women in early America were free. What, if anything, did enslaved black women in the South have in common with powerful female leaders in Iroquois society? Were female tavern keepers in the backcountry of North Carolina any more free than nuns and sisters in New France religious orders? When strange signs appeared in the sky over Québec during the autumn of 1660, people began to worry about evil forces in their midst. They feared that witches and magicians had arrived in the colony, and a teenaged servant named Barbe Hallay started to act as if she were possessed. The community tried to make sense of what was happening, and why. Priests and nuns performed rituals to drive the demons away, while the bishop and the governor argued about how to investigate their suspicions of witchcraft. A local miller named Daniel Vuil, accused of using his knowledge of the dark arts to torment Hallay, was imprisoned and then executed. Stories of the demonic infestation circulated through the small settlement on the St Lawrence River for several years. In The Possession of Barbe Hallay Mairi Cowan revisits these stories to understand the everyday experiences and deep anxieties of people in New France. Her findings offer insight into beliefs about demonology and witchcraft, the limits of acceptable adolescent behaviour, the dissonance between a Catholic colony in theory and the church’s wavering influence in practice, the contested authority accorded to women as healers, and the insecurities of the colonial project. As the people living through the events knew at the time, and as this study reveals, New France was in a precarious position. The Possession of Barbe Hallay is both a fascinating account of a case of demonic possession and an accessible introduction to social and religious history in early modern North America.
