La señorita Froy parece haberse volatilizado: nadie en el tren recuerda haberla visto, Iris parece no estar en sus cabales y solo un joven, pese a no creerla del todo, se ofrecerá a ayudarla para aclarar lo que puede o no haber ocurrido. La dama desaparece (1936), que sería llevada al cine por Alfred Hitchock en 1938, es un clásico de la novela de misterio británica y recrea una situación de ansiedad extrema que la acerca al thriller psicológico. Su autora, Ethel Lina White, fue en la década de 1930 tan famosa en la novela policiaca como sus contemporáneas Dorothy Sayers y Agatha Christie y en sus obras recupera la tradición romántica de la mujer sola atrapada en un entorno hostil.

In Luisa Capetillo's three-act play written in 1907, "Influences of Modern Ideas," Angelina, the daughter of a rich Puerto Rican businessman and landowner, educates herself by reading the works of European writers, philosophers, and anarchists. After reading Tolstoy's The Slavery of Our Times, she is convinced that "the slavery of our times is the inflexible wage law." As the workers go on strike in her home town of Arecibo, Angelina tries to convince her father to give his property--home, factories, land--to the working class.
