Questo libro rimarrà fra le opere più ardite, più alte e più felici sul mito nel nostro secolo. Robert Graves, poeta, romanziere e mitografo immensamente dotto, capì presto che nelle storie mitiche si celavano e ci sfidavano molti segreti. E questo da sempre, perché l’enigma sta nel cuore del mito. Come per esempio nei casi seguenti: «Chi rese fesso il piede del Diavolo? «Quando giunsero in Britannia le cinquanta Danaidi con i loro vagli? «Quale segreto era intrecciato nel nodo gordiano? «Perché Jahvèh creò gli alberi e le erbe prima del sole, della luna e delle stelle? «Dove si troverà la saggezza?». Questo libro leggendario, ma più nominato che conosciuto, è non solo l’opera maggiore di Graves ma una vera grammatica del mito, che insegna agli ingenui moderni ad articolare una lingua sempre viva. Robert Graves (1895-1986) pubblicò "La Dea Bianca" per la prima volta nel 1948; una nuova edizione riveduta e ampliata apparve nel 1961: su di essa è condotta la presente traduzione.

Il bianco, come scrivono Castoldi e Hillman, è all'origine delle religioni, dell'arte, del linguaggio e rappresenta l'incontro primo tra il sensibile e il visibile. Architetture del bianco è un viaggio teorico-creativo attorno alle lingue del bianco, ripercorrendo, nei primi capitoli, alcune importanti rappresentazioni tra arte e scrittura, ricerca della linfa primaria, mitologica da cui le espressività hanno mosso i loro segni. Il libro rilegge importanti percorsi creativi spinti nelle trame del bianco e della sua luce, e il contagio linguistico, che con il suo coinvolgimento ha determinato un itinerario consegnato in differenti ambiti espressivi al nuovo millennio. Il niveo colore e la ricerca monocroma connotano l'originalità dell'arte del Novecento. Sul finire degli anni '50 un fremito attraversa l'Europa e le culture d'oltreoceano, accendendo luci monocrome lungo una linea immaginaria, bianca, di confine tra i linguaggi del secolo. Le esposizioni monocrome, che coincidono con rivendicazioni sociali, linguistiche, annunciano la reviviscenza dello spirito avanguardistico. Gli artisti che segnano questa storia cercano l'antica simbiosi tra le realtà dell'invisibile, seguendo le tracce di Malevic?, Manzoni, Castellani, Savelli, Scarpa, Fontana. Lo studio traccia un panorama, anche internazionale, di artisti noti e meno noti, che con storicità differenti, secondo un andare frattalico, un intimo affanno hanno conquistato un'idea di bianco e di luce, quale linguaggio estremo della propria ricerca. Le derive del bianco si aprono e si concludono con il riferimento al viaggio è all'ultimo sogno bianco, silenzioso di Pippa Bacca, non più corpo, ma opera d'arte. VITTORIA BIASI, critica e storica dell'arte contemporanea, è docente di Storia dell'Arte Contemporanea presso l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze. Dopo il corso laurea in studi umanistici, si interessa alle teorie del bianco frequentando per un anno l'École de Haute Étude a Parigi con Hubert Damish. Vicina ad artisti interpreti della monocromia bianca, si dedica alla critica teorica realizzando eventi, mostre nazionali e internazionali con particolare attenzione agli scenari culturali dell'oriente.
