Esta publicacion nos muestra la defensa de la ciudad de Valencia durante los anos de 1936-1939 bajo dos premisas; una que es saber cuales fueron los mas sensibles y bombardeados y si responden a la idea de un bombardeo estrategico. La segunda premisa es si la ciudad dispuso de una organizacion eficiente para proteger a su poblacion civil. La propuesta metodologica se basa en la utilizacion de los parametros clasicos de la intervencion arqueologica, con la posibilidad de elaborar catalogos de bienes, tematicos, temporales, etc... que puedan derivar en herramientas para el planeamiento urbanistico, en cartas arqueologicas, y demas documentos. En ella tambien se realiza una analisis comparativo del marco legislativo actual tanto a nivel nacional como autonomico (Murcia, Valencia y Cataluna). Se realiza una clasificacion de los elementos que conforman los distintos patrimonios y sus principales caracteristicas con el fin de disponer de una base teorica donde situar los restos arqueologicos y documentales localizados, distinguiendo su naturaleza en activa (militar) centros de Resistencias, Defensa de Costa y aerodromos, y por otra la pasiva (civil) como los refugios. Se han analizado la documentacion referente a 1936 a 1939, recogida en los diferentes archivos, el Municipal de Valencia, el de la Diputacion, el Historico Militar de Avila, el Militar Intermedio de Valencia, La Biblioteca Militar 'Centro de Culturas', la Hemeroteca Municipal y La Biblioteca Valenciana. Todo ello se realiza mediante la prospeccion extensiva y mediante GPS, con levantamientos planimetricos de los restos localizados y la digitalizacion de toda la planimetria de la epoca. Se establece como unidad gestora de la documentacion el GvSIG, un software libre, que permite combinar datos geograficos, bases de datos con datos vectoriales y raster. Y se elabora una cartoteca planimetrica de todos los refugios conocidos en la ciudad de Valencia, y de los elementos mas esenciales de la defensa activa del municipio del Puig. Asi como un glosario de terminologia militar con el objeto que ayude al lector y un listado diario de los bombardeos que sufrio la ciudad durante los anos 1937 a 1939.

The Archaeology of the Spanish Civil War offers the first comprehensive account of the Spanish Civil War from an archaeological perspective, providing an alternative narrative on one of the most important conflicts of the twentieth century, widely seen as a prelude to the Second World War. Between 1936 and 1939, totalitarianism and democracy, fascism and revolution clashed in Spain, while the latest military technologies were being tested, including strategic bombing and combined arms warfare, and violence against civilians became widespread. Archaeology, however, complicates the picture as it brings forgotten actors into play: obsolete weapons, vernacular architecture, ancient structures (from Iron Age hillforts to sheepfolds), peasant traditions, and makeshift arms. By looking at these things, another story of the war unfolds, one that pays more attention to intimate experiences and anonymous individuals. Archaeology also helps to clarify battles, which were often chaotic and only partially documented, and to understand better the patterns of political violence, whose effects were literally buried for over 70 years. The narrative starts with the coup against the Second Spanish Republic on 18 July 1936, follows the massacres and battles that marked the path of the war, and ends in the early 1950s, when the last forced labor camps were closed and the anti-Francoist guerrillas suppressed. The book draws on 20 years of research to bring together perspectives from battlefield archaeology, archaeologies of internment, and forensics. It will be of interest to anybody interested in historical and contemporary archaeology, human rights violations, modern military history, and negative heritage.

REPÚBLICA LITERARIA Y REVOLUCIÓN (1920-1939) quiere ser un ensayo de interpretación de un proceso cultural que trata de reconstruir el hilo rojo de la literatura española durante los años veinte y treinta. Un hilo rojo que tuvo a la intelectualidad comunista como vanguardia que trató de hacer compatibles literatura y política. Pero una vanguardia que comprendía no sólo a los intelectuales militantes sino también a los «compañeros de viaje», que colaboraron juntos, en oposición al fascismo ascendente, en la construcción del Frente Popular de la cultura española. Libros, editoriales, periódicos y revistas alimentaron a un público formado mayoritariamente por lectores de la burguesía y pequeña burguesía republicana, liberal y progresista, pero también por una minoría de la clase obrera (anarquistas, comunistas, socialistas, trotskistas), por una vanguardia política que sentía hambre y sed de cultura y de literatura revolucionarias. Reconstruir una vanguardia cuesta acaso dos o tres generaciones y en 1939 nuestra vanguardia intelectual y política, «cautiva y desarmada», tuvo que exiliarse, fue fusilada o condenada al insilio como precio impuesto por la Victoria de una dictadura militar franquista.

Ahora, cuando han trascurrido 84 años de la terminación de la Guerra Civil española, cuando se han cumplido 106 años del nacimiento del autor y quince de su fallecimiento, he decidido dar a la imprenta el manuscrito del diario que redactó. Al publicar el libro, mi esperanza sería que la memoria fiel de lo que sucedió contribuya, por modestamente que sea, a una visión verídica de aquellos dramáticos acontecimientos. El texto comienza el 18 de julio de 1936, con unas escuetas anotaciones ocasionales que, desde junio de 1937, se convirtieron en un verdadero diario de la guerra percibida por él. En sus páginas, el autor recoge una minuciosa reseña de las peripecias, tanto personales como bélicas, que vivió en los frentes del Pirineo aragonés, por los montes de las provincias de Zaragoza, Teruel y Castellón, en el avance del Ejército nacional en dirección a Valencia. El diario concluye en diciembre de 1939, cuando el soldado, ya licenciado, regresó a casa.
