La democrazia non è una necessità “esterna” della società civile, ma una sua superiore potenza, un fine immanente e ha la sua forza nell’unità del suo universale scopo e del particolare interesse dei cittadini. Una delle sue caratteristiche fondamentali consiste proprio nell’identità del sistema dell’interesse particolare con il sistema dell’interesse generale. È implicito in essa un consapevole rapporto tra singolo e collettività che va ben oltre ogni collisione empirica. Per questa ragione non dovrebbe sussistere alcuna “dipendenza” degli interessi del singolo da quelli collettivi, per la forza nell’unità che esercita lo scopo finale universale della democrazia stessa che riconosce diritti e doveri compenetrandoli ragionevolmente in un rapporto reale. L’ambito di validità dei diritti è proprio la loro inclinazione verso i doveri che appaiono auto-obbligazioni, in un rapporto universale-individuale che è poi a ben vedere il rapporto tra necessità-libertà che si sviluppa nella sua realtà oggettiva, o meglio nella necessità dell’idealità. È questo il sentimento politico che permea l’idea di popolo e la differenzia da quella di moltitudine inordinata. In altre parole, l’interesse generale realizza e conserva nel tempo gli interessi particolari, anche grazie alla formazione dell’autocoscienza di “individuo politico” (riduzione di sé in molti). La democrazia è dunque oggettivazione del sentimento politico, sviluppo organico nelle sue distinzioni reali, necessità delle idealità (anteporre il pubblico interesse all’interesse particolare). Ed è la forma della cultura che consente il passaggio dall’idea astratta alla realtà con la dovuta stabilità, dalla moltitudo al popolo, nella realtà che è “attività”. In altre parole, consente la realizzazione di un interesse generale che è conservazione degli interessi particolari, secondo la formula en to pros eteron, prender posto di fronte all’altro: gli uni fronteggianti gli altri nella uguaglianza, in una coesistenza che non è casuale.

During the Cold War Italy witnessed the existence of an anomalous version of a civil conflict, defined as a 'creeping' or a 'low-intensity' civil war. Political violence escalated, including bomb attacks against civilians, starting with a massacre in Milan, on 12 December 1969, and culminating with the massacre in Bologna, on 2 August 1980. Making use of the literature on national reconciliation and narrative psychology theory, this book examines the fight over the 'judicial' and the 'historical' truth in Italy today, through a contrasting analysis of judicial findings and the 'narratives of victimhood' prevalent among representatives of both the post- and the neo-fascist right.
