Il volume, attingendo a tradizioni disciplinari e storiografiche diverse, offre una serie di sintesi e di affondi tematici, funzionali alla contestualizzazione del peculiare caso dell’episcopato di Bobbio, fondato nel 1014 nell’Appennino piacentino quale sviluppo del celebre monastero di San Colombano. La notevole massa documentaria disponibile grazie al recente riordino degli archivi diocesani, che ha consentito di illustrare anche la biblioteca della cattedrale, ha richiesto una presentazione d’insieme e una specifica attenzione per gli atti costitutivi della nuova istituzione. L’approfondimento del contesto storico entro cui si dipana la successiva vicenda diocesana è stato condotto in rapporto con il monastero e con una selezione delle città vicine. All’analisi delle dinamiche insediative del centro bobbiese e degli sviluppi strutturali della chiesa e del complesso episcopale fanno da contrappunto sia approfondimenti mirati all’organizzazione del territorio, colta nelle sue articolazioni civili, religiose, assistenziali, sia trattazioni di componenti culturali e liturgiche che animano questa Chiesa.

This volume is the first one in a collection connected to the PRIN project on Ruling in hard times. Patterns of Power and practices of government in the making of Carolingian Italy. Its focus lays on bishops and their networks of relationships in late-8th and 9th-century Italy. The episcopal contribution to the inclusion of the Lombard kingdom in the Carolingian social and political landscape is especially analyzed from the perspective of the cultural exchanges (of ideas, texts, and manuscripts) that bishops created or used to carry out their public and pastoral duties. Each paper focuses on a specific episcopal figure or area, reconstructing the scope and extent of the relationships of which they were the pivot. This ground-breaking study explores welfare institutions in western law in the middle ages and establishes, for the first time, a legal model for the hospital. On Hospitals takes us beyond canon law, Carolingian capitularies, and Justinian's Code and Novels, to late Roman testamentary law, identifying new legislation and legal initiatives in every period. In challenging long established orthodoxies, a new history of the hospital emerges, one that is fundamentally a European history. To the history of law, it offers an unusual lens through which to explore canon law. What this monograph identifies for the first time is that the absence of law is the key. This is a study of what happened when there was no legal inheritance, nor even an authority through which to act. Here, at the fringes of law, pioneers worked, and forgers played. Their efforts shed light on councils, both familiar and forgotten, and on major figures, including Abbot Ansegis of Saint Wandrille, Abbot Wala of Corbie, the Pseudo-Isidorian forgers, Pope Alexander III, Bernard of Pavia, and Robert de Courson. Finally On Hospitals offers a new picture of welfare at the heart of Christianity. The place of welfare houses, at the edge of law, has for too long encouraged an assumption that welfare itself was peripheral to popes and canonists and so, by implication, to those who designed the priorities of the Church. This study reveals the central place for them all, across a thousand years, of Christian caritas. We discover a Christian foundation that could belong not to the Church, but to the whole society of the faithful.

Il sesto volume delle ricerche condotte dall’Università di Venezia a Nonantola in questi anni è dedicato al monumento forse più importante della provincia di Modena per il periodo medievale e per la storia non solo architettonica, ma politica, religiosa e civile dell’intera regione: l’abbazia di S. Silvestro, la cui fondazione nel 752, ad opera di Anselmo, cognato del re longobardo Astolfo, segna anche una svolta culturale, con l’indebolimento di ogni influenza bizantina, ormai delegata al ruolo di Venezia, e l’inclusione dell’Italia settentrionale nell’ambito degli imperi centro europei, prima sotto i Franchi, poi sotto i Germani. La ricerca archeologica viene declinata sotto tutti i tuoi aspetti e rappresenta bene il contributo che questo tipo di ricerche può dare alla ricostruzione storica, non solo recuperando e acquisendo elementi importanti per la storia stessa dell’abbazia dal punto di vista strutturale ed architettonico, ma recuperando tutti gli aspetti della vita sociale, delle condizioni economiche, degli aspetti culturali in senso lato della comunità dei monaci per secoli, dall’VIII al XII (Luigi Malnati).

I protagonisti: Goffredo di Loritello comes Catacensis e il pontefice Callisto II. Sono, altresì, ricostruiti sulla base delle risultanze documentali lo sviluppo urbanistico, economico, sociale e religioso di una comunità in trasformazione e le complesse vicende prosopografiche della famiglia Loritello fino all’ultima erede, la contessa Clemenza. Nei tempi di Federico II emergono le nuove figure dei conti Riccardo Fallucca e Anselmo de Justingen e si profila quella del capostipite della famiglia Ruffo: Pietro de Calabria.

L’Arazzo (o meglio, il ricamo) di Bayeux è una delle opere artistiche più note del Medioevo, che narra per immagini la conquista dell’Inghilterra da parte dei Normanni guidati dal duca Guglielmo il Conquistatore. Immagini tratte dal ricamo sono riprodotte su migliaia di oggetti che vogliono evocare l’età medievale; e al contempo l’opera è stata oggetto di centinaia di studi in molti paesi europei, da parte di storici, storici dell’arte e studiosi di narrativa. In tutto ciò, alcune domande e alcune risposte mancano, in particolare per quanto riguarda la cultura politica espressa nell’opera: è indubbio che il ricamo sia una narrazione delle imprese di Guglielmo il Conquistatore, un tentativo di conciliazione tra Inglesi e Normanni e in parte un’esaltazione del ruolo del vescovo Oddone di Bayeux; ma è anche l’espressione di una serie di ideali politici e modelli di ordine, una lettura e una valutazione del sistema di potere contemporaneo, organizzato attorno al regno e fondato sulla preminenza aristocratica e sul valore dei legami personali. Il volume si propone di seguire questa linea di ricerca, mostrando come, da molti punti di vista (il cerimoniale politico, il ruolo del re, i legami di fedeltà aristocratici), il ricamo rifletta un immaginario sociale e una serie di ideali politici ben riconoscibili.
