In September 1855, Teresa Dus, a Slovenian-speaking ten-year-old girl, saw the Virgin Mary in Porzûs. The apparitions began a devotion among the Slovenian population on the border between the Italian and Slovenian ethnicities and cultures. The ecclesiastical authorities of Udine took the child, locked her in a religious house and extinguished the devotion. The context was marked by a cholera epidemic and by the "national" and pan-Slavist problem, exacerbated by the Crimean war (1853–1856). Devotion to the Virgin had had an international flowering "from below" (La Salette, 1846), followed by the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception (1854). The dogma was then "sanctioned" by the apparitions of Lourdes (1858). The Porzûs affair is investigated in this international context.

This lavishly illustrated book looks at the art and architecture of episcopal palaces as expressions of power and ideology. Tracing the history of the bishop's residence in the urban centers of northern Italy over the Middle Ages, Maureen C. Miller asks why this once rudimentary and highly fortified structure called a domus became a complex and elegant "palace" (palatium) by the late twelfth century. Miller argues that the change reflects both the emergence of a distinct clerical culture and the attempts of bishops to maintain authority in public life. She relates both to the Gregorian reform movement, which set new standards for clerical deportment and at the same time undercut episcopal claims to secular power. As bishops lost temporal authority in their cities to emerging communal governments, they compensated architecturally and competed with the communes for visual and spatial dominance in the urban center. This rivalry left indelible marks on the layout and character of Italian cities.Moreover, Miller contends, this struggle for power had highly significant, but mixed, results for western Christianity. On the one hand, as bishops lost direct governing authority in their cities, they devised ways to retain status, influence, and power through cultural practices. This response to loss was highly creative. On the other hand, their loss of secular control led bishops to emphasize their spiritual powers and to use them to obtain temporal ends. The coercive use of spiritual authority contributed to the emergence of a "persecuting society" in the central Middle Ages.

La personalità e l’attività pastorale del primo arcivescovo di Gorizia Carlo Michele d’Attems furono di grande rilievo storico, tali da elevare Gorizia al punto di farne nel XVIII secolo il centro nevralgico di una complessa vita religiosa che abbraccia diverse etnie e tradizioni ecclesiastiche. Le sue scrupolose e ricche visite pastorali sono un documento di straordinaria importanza per capire non solo lo stato della cultura e della mentalità delle popolazioni, ma anche i problemi dell’organizzazione ecclesiastica secondo gli schemi della normativa tridentina. Nell’ambito di un programma internazionale di ricerca ed in preparazione al convegno internazionale di studio a lui dedicato, è stato predisposto un volume di studi introduttivi (con scritti di G. De Rosa, A. Martina, C. De Nicolò, D. Fain, L. Tavano e L. Pillon) che costituiscono un avvio alla miglior conoscenza dell’arcivescovo goriziano ed una guida per gli studiosi che intendono usufruire delle fonti attemsiane. Del Convegno internazionale sono disponibili gli atti (con saggi di venticinque studiosi italiani, sloveni e austriaci) che offrono un quadro articolato dell’attività dell’Attems e della situazione religiosa e sociale relativi alla vastissima e complessa arcidiocesi goriziana.
