"How can we understand the past in the absence of written records? Pre-modern histories of cross-cultural exchange pose a particular problem for medieval historians. They are marked by the long-distance mobility of concepts, individuals, and materials, and many of them cannot be reconstructed from the standard source texts on which historians usually depend. They exist without named makers, both outside and beyond official documents and court chronicles. The same is true of artisans responsible for crafting objects whose circulation and reception defined aesthetic, economic, and technological networks that may not have conformed to political or sectarian boundaries. Authored by two leading medieval historians of the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, Object Lessons addresses the gaps in medieval sources and modern scholarship, arguing for the archival value of objects, images, and monuments. Flood and Fricke examine six case studies that focus on the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. From the stone carvings at the churches of Lalibela, Ethiopia, which have no textual documentation, to medicinal bowls from Iraq for which some data can be gathered from unassociated but contemporary sources, these studies show how imagery and objects traveled across continents. The authors connect the histories of medieval Europe, Africa, and west Asia, and raise significant questions about "out of place" objects and how, in the absence of substantial archival material, we might write their histories. While there have been many publications on the histories of global circulation, most of them focus on the early modern period in Europe. The Spanish Craze is the compelling story of the centuries-long U.S. fascination with the history, literature, art, culture, and architecture of Spain. Richard L. Kagan offers a stunningly revisionist understanding of the origins of hispanidad in America, tracing its origins from the early republic to the New Deal. As Spanish power and influence waned in the Atlantic World by the eighteenth century, her rivals created the “Black Legend,” which promoted an image of Spain as a dead and lost civilization rife with innate cruelty and cultural and religious backwardness. The Black Legend and its ambivalences influenced Americans throughout the nineteenth century, reaching a high pitch in the Spanish-American War of 1898. However, the Black Legend retreated soon thereafter, and Spanish culture and heritage became attractive to Americans for its perceived authenticity and antimodernism. Although the Spanish craze infected regions where the Spanish New World presence was most felt—California, the American Southwest, Texas, and Florida—there were also early, quite serious flare-ups of the craze in Chicago, New York, and New England. Kagan revisits early interest in Hispanism among elites such as the Boston book dealer Obadiah Rich, a specialist in the early history of the Americas, and the writers Washington Irving and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He also considers later enthusiasts such as Angeleno Charles Lummis and the many writers, artists, and architects of the modern Spanish Colonial Revival in the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Spain’s political and cultural elites understood that the promotion of Spanish culture in the United States and the Western Hemisphere in general would help overcome imperial defeats while uniting Spaniards and those of Spanish descent into a singular raza whose shared characteristics and interests transcended national boundaries. With elegant prose and verve, The Spanish Craze spans centuries and provides a captivating glimpse into distinct facets of Hispanism in monuments, buildings, and private homes; the visual, performing, and cinematic arts; and the literature, travel journals, and letters of its enthusiasts in the United States.

El llamado «claustro de Palamós» ha recibido una intensa atención mediática, social y académica. Més enllà de qüestionables rentats de cara o d’algunes restauracions abusives, el perill de les obres d’art no rau en el canvi de lectura que se’n fa al llarg del temps sinó en l’oblit o en la negació del marc per al qual les obres van ser creades. Art fugitiu és un llibre que revisa aquesta realitat complexa. A través de les diferents aportacions que integra, recupera temes lligats a la mobilitat de les peces i a la seva entitat. La idea neix de les iniciatives vinculades al projecte Contextos per a l’art català medieval desplaçat (2009-2012) i a tot un conjunt d’altres projectes, precedents i actuals, del grup consolidat EMAC Romànic i Gòtic, de la Universitat de Barcelona. Es tracta del tercer volum d’una sèrie que aplega els resultats dels simposis internacionals celebrats pel grup EMAC els anys 2007, 2009 i 2012, dins d’un projecte global que ambiciona d’arribar a la catalogació i l’estudi de totes les obres catalanes medievals que es conserven fora de Catalunya, amb l’objectiu de crear un corpus en què, malgrat la seva naturalesa fugitiva, cada peça pugui ser apreciada tant per la seva procedència com per la suma de les característiques que ens permeten veure-la com objecte únic i excepcional.
