En este texto pretendemos reflexionar sobre la importancia que la educación social tiene en el desarrollo de los territorios periféricos, para colaborar en la transformación de estos entornos, en zonas de prácticas ciudadanas, así como posibilitar en las personas que lo habitan, una conciencia crítica que les haga ser conscientes de su posición en las sociedades; y es que esta posición no es casual, simplemente se ha tratado de segregar a ciertas poblaciones del resto de la sociedad y, esta separación, se ha realizado a través de la estructura territorial, marcando fronteras artificiales en ciertos lugares, pobres y deprimidos, para separar a las personas que allí habitan del resto de la sociedad. Ejemplificamos el trabajo en un barrio segregado, apartado de las relaciones de poder y de los avances sociales, donde nada de lo que pasa en ellos tiene importancia para el resto de la sociedad, analizando las actuaciones que con los jóvenes y las familias se realizan desde la educación social, fundamentalmente, en el denominado absentismo escolar de las niñas y niños del barrio, que les conducirán, irremediablemente, a través de un itinerario vital predeterminado a la pobreza y a la exclusión, si no actuamos y el propio barrio no actúa a través de acciones socioeducativas que empoderen a las personas que lo habitan.
