En primer lugar, desde el punto de vista de la gran cantidad de información. No creo que exista otro libro sobre la filosofía del Derecho en Italia que tenga notas así tan rico de citas bibliográficas. Sólo en este aspecto, usted ya ha realizado un trabajo muy útil. No tengo dificultad en imaginarme cuanto tiempo le ha costado una investigación conducida con tanto escrúpulo y con mucha seriedad. Cada uno de los autores que usted ha citado deberán estarle agradecidos por la ayuda que este libro le ofrece para encontrar su lugar en medio de los otros. Después de la lectura de su libro, yo mismo veo más claro el conjunto de mis relaciones con quienes, en aquellos años, y también después, se han ocupado más o menos de los mismos problemas. En segundo lugar, también desde el punto de vista del amplio tratamiento que usted realiza del debate sobre las normas y las diversas perspectivas en que este problema es discutido. Todo lo que ha escrito respecto a la teoría general de las normas, considero que no existe ningún libro así tan especializado en que se puedan encontrar valiosas informaciones sobre esta materia".

"Reconozco que me he sentido fuertemente atraído por el neopositivismo y por la filosofía analítica durante los años en que comencé a ocuparme con continuidad de teoría general del Derecho y de metodología de la ciencia jurídica. A recibir la influencia de tales corrientes de pensamiento me encontraba por lo demás predispuesto por un radical aborrecimiento de los discursos demasiado generales sobre el ser y el no ser y por la necesidad de permanecer con los pies en la tierra y de moverme, si era necesario moverse, dando un paso cada vez. Del neopositivismo he sacado el gusto por el rigor conceptual, de la filosofía analítica he aprendido cuán grande es la importancia de las cuestiones de palabras, especialmente en el procedimiento intelectual propio de los juristas que es la interpretación. Por lo demás, por la misma razón por la que no me he identificado con ningún “ismo” dominante en la filosofía italiana (después del idealismo fue la vez del existencialismo y del marxismo), no me he considerado nunca un neopositivista ni tampoco un filósofo analítico en el sentido estricto de la palabra. Cae de su peso que quien prefiere el paciente trabajo del análisis a la construcción de las grandes síntesis se mueve en pequeños espacios, tan pequeños como para no conseguir recorrer, incluso en el curso de toda una vida, todo el territorio. Para cultivar un campo inmenso, como es el del Derecho, en todos sus aspectos, sería necesario poseer un potente tractor, mientras que el único instrumento que he llegado a manejar son las tijeras del jardinero".
