This groundbreaking study examines how modern Colombian literature—from Gabriel García Márquez to Juan Gabriel Vásquez—reflects one of the world’s most tumultuous entrances into globalization. While these literary icons, one canonical, the other emergent, bookend Colombia’s fall and rise on the world stage, the period between the two was inordinately violent, spanning the Colombian urban novel’s evolution into narco-literature. Marking Colombia’s cultural and literary manifestations as threefold, this book explores García Márquez’s retreat to a rural romanticism that paradoxically made him a global literary icon; the country’s violent end to the twentieth century when its largest economic export was narcotics; and the contemporary period in which a new major author has emerged to create a “literature of national reconstitution.” Harkening back to the Regeneration movement and extending through the early twenty-first century, this book analyzes the cultural implications of Colombia’s relationship to the wider world.

Through a comparative analysis of the novels of Roberto Bola–o and the fictional work of CŽsar Aira, Mario Bellatin, Diamela Eltit, Chico Buarque, Alberto Fuguet, and Fernando Vallejo, among other contemporaries, HŽctor Hoyos defines new trends in how we read and write in a globalized era. Calling attention to fresh innovations in form, voice, perspective, and representation, he also affirms the lead role of Latin American authors in reshaping world literature. Focusing on post-1989 Latin American novels and their representation of globalization, Hoyos considers the narrative techniques and aesthetic choices Latin American authors make to assimilate the conflicting forces at work in our increasingly interconnected world. Challenging the assumption that globalization leads to cultural homogenization, his book identifies the rich textual strategies that estrange and re-mediate power relations both within literary canons and across global cultural hegemonies. Hoyos shines a light on the unique, avant garde phenomena that animate these works, such as modeling literary circuits after the dynamics of the art world, imagining counterfactual ÒNaziÓ histories, exposing the limits of escapist narratives, and formulating textual forms that resist worldwide literary consumerism. La introducción del modo de producción moderno supuso que la cuenca media del río Magdalena transitó de un mundo mítico que se expresaba en el canto y la poesía a un mundo histórico que era expresado por la historia y la novela. La poética de la tierra caliente será al mismo tiempo producto y forma de conciencia de un mundo orquestado por unas faenas sociales concretas, de las atadas a la ribera y a la selva, de las emplazadas en medio de los cultivos, de las adentradas en las profundidades de las minas, de las que surgieron con las aldeas primordiales. El ascenso y la caída de estas faenas sociales, su expansión así como su declive, fueron capturados por esta poética de la tierra caliente en la forma de unas tragedias amorosas, de unos sentimientos sublimes socavados por distintas adversidades, en las que siempre se dibujaba la presencia del indio antiguo. Los sufrimientos del modo de producción colonial irredimibles por cuenta del modo de producción moderno afianzaron la idea de que estos eran naturales del trópico profundo y, como tales, partícipes de las propias idiosincrasias de las gentes. Para esta invención idiosincrática del sufrimiento que culpaba a la naturaleza más que al modo de producción resultó indispensable poner en circulación al indígena en la forma de indio antiguo. Esta es la mímesis segunda del hecho colonial en la mitología nacional.

Es usual que las memorias se escriban en primera persona del singular y que se ciñan a la vida de quien las escribe y a lo sucedido. Este texto se acomoda parcialmente a tal género porque, además de recuerdos personales, contiene crónica histórica, novela de formación y artificio literario. Está escrito en segunda persona creando una tensión entre quien lleva la voz narrativa y quien vivió. La vida se vive en presente, en forma secuencial, cada instante una sola vez, siempre hacia delante y no se puede modificar lo ya vivido. Quien lleva la voz narrativa y es responsable de la escritura, por el contrario, siempre puede corregir y organizar secuencias buscando efectos estéticos o intereses particulares. Puede, además, callar, sobrepujar, seleccionar o complementar. Por eso, más que el relato de una vida, ofrecemos aquí una reflexión sobre los procesos de escritura y sobre la profesión de escritor.
