An analysis of the status of the Jews in medieval Spain, and the process of gestation which led to the general expulsion of 1492. States that the Jews were allowed to live in the Christian kingdoms, not out of tolerance but due to sheer economic necessity, and with the expectation of their future conversion. They were segregated and persecuted through special legislation, their image was negatively stereotyped (e.g. cowards, usurers), they were prey to religious and physical violence (e.g. Talmud burning, theological disputations, forced conversion, pogroms), and were harassed by the Inquisition. All these built up to the point that the Christian conscience perceived the Jews as a collective danger to be eliminated altogether.

Seminar paper del año 2007 en eltema Historia de Europa - Edad Media, Edad Moderna, Nota: 1,5, Universidad de Extremadura, Materia: Historia moderna de España, Idioma: Español, Resumen: Por medio de la destrucción del templo en Jerusalén y la expulsión de la Tierra Santa por los romanos en el primer siglo d.C. los judíos no tenían nigún país que se pudiesen considerarlo su propiedad. Se establecieron a través de toda Europa incluso en España. El lapso de tiempo entre mediados de los siglos XII y mediados del siglo XIV significó algo extraordinario para la comunidad judía. Los judíos disfrutaban por poco tiempo de la prosperidad del Estado que existía en todo los ámbitos. Los soberanos les dieron amparo, o sea, la certeza de poder viver en paz. No obstante, como ha ocurrido en la historía de los judíos frecuentemente, no se les otorgó el poder vivir en paz por más que unos pocos siglos. Mientras que la persecución a los judios a finales del siglo XIV se limitaba aterrorizarles con saqueos y ejecuciones, se fue mucho más lejos cien años más tarde. Los Reyes Católicos tomaron medidas hasta entonces desconocidas tanto en cuanto al grado de su organización como en su crudeza. El tribunal del Santo Oficio puso fin a cualquier intento por parte de los conversos de seguir fieles a la fe judía a escondidas y la expulsión de los judíos en el año 1492 terminó de una vez para siempre con la existencia de la comunidad judía. La pregunta en cuestión decisiva en el trabajo presente es cuáles fueron las razones que llevaron a los Reyes Católicos a tomar medidas tan drásticas y, además, cómo justificaban estas razones un prodecimiento que busca su igual. Para encontrar una respuesta adecuada a la pregunta hecha es necesario retroceder al tiempo anterior a los acontecimientos que ocurrieron a finales del siglo XIV. Además debe de explicarse cómo la superviviencia de los judíos dependía de dos condiciones obligatorias: un ambiente social que fomentase el bienestar y la prosperidad y, en segundo lugar, el gobierno de soberanos capaces de asegurar el órden público y la seguridad de los bienes. La primera parte de este trabajo debe abordar en orden cronológico los acontecimientos más decisivos en el siglo anterior a que los reyes tomaran medidas acerca de los judíos y de los conversos. Además, la situción social y el prestigio del dicho grupo son dilucidados en la sociedad medieval a vísperas de la Inquisición y de la expulsión. En la segunda parte paso por la política de los Reyes Católicos y por la pregunta de que si las medidas tomadas fueron necesarios.

Traces the history of the Jews in Spain until the expulsion in 1492 in regard to relations between the Crown, the Church, and the populace regarding the Jews and Conversos. Discusses, also, the fate of the Conversos during the 16th century. Focuses on Castile, with special attention to the city of Ávila. Asserts that anti-Jewish hostility in Spain, already from the time of the Visigoths, was not based on racism, but rather on negative religious stereotypes rooted in the minds of the populace and of the lower clergy, as well as on socioeconomic factors, such as the rise of Jews to dominant positions in Spanish society and politics, and the practice of usury by rich Jews which awoke a profound hatred among Christians, especially in times of crisis. The fortune of the Jews depended on a balance between the hatred of the populace and incitement of the lower clergy, on the one hand, and the protection of the Crown on the other. So long as the Crown imposed its policy of protection, the situation of the Jews was good, but from the beginning of the 14th century onwards, when the hostility of the populace and of the Church grew stronger, and their pressure on the Crown achieved a degree of success, the situation of the Jews deteriorated, reaching extremes such as the pogrom of 1391. The 15th century saw a progressive capitulation of the Crown to the pressure of the populace and the Church. The establishment of the Inquisition in 1478, and the enactment of the edict of Expulsion of 1492, marked the end of the confrontation between the Crown, the Church, and the populace regarding the Jews and Conversos, which facilitated the expansion of Spain as a unified nation.
