Quels émotions animent les mobilisations des profanes en faveur des biens à préserver ? Et finalement, sur quelles valeurs fondamentales repose la notion même de patrimoine ? Telles sont les questions auxquelles répond de livre, à partir d'enquêtes au plus près du terrain. Car c'est dans le détail des procédures, des propos enregistrés, des scènes et des gestes observés que l'on peut réellement comprendre comment - c'est-à-dire pourquoi - les limites du patrimoine n'ont cessé, en une génération, de s'étendre, englobant désormais non seulement la "cathédrale" mais aussi la "petite cuillère" - selon les mots d'André Chastel définissant le service de l'Inventaire -, voire, tout récemment, la borne Michelin. The world is full of traces of the past, ranging from things as different as monuments and factories to farms, eco-museums, landscapes, mountaineering and even woven-grass bridges. These traces must be protected and passed on to future generations. Communicational analysis shows that these traces have acquired the status of heritage by becoming communicative beings imbued with a new social life. Up until the 1970s and 1980s, granting this status was the prerogative of the state. New modes then emerged, increasingly involving social actors and the publicization of knowledge. Today, the heritage recognition of these traces also depends on interpretative schemes that circulate in society, notably through the media.
