Entre 1870 y 1930 el circo fue el espectáculo más atractivo y popular en México. A diferencia de otras diversiones públicas, sorprendió y deleitó a las familias ricas, medianas y pobres. Las compañías de circo rompían con la rutina diaria del espectador común, pues realizaban proezas y desplegaban habilidades extraordinarias: presentaban a hombres que saltaban 16 caballos en fila, devoraban fuego, se elevaban en globos aerostáticos, eran lanzados por un cañón, o bien, mostraban a mujeres envueltas en serpientes, a elefantes que giraban 360 grados parados sobre una sola de sus patas, a osos montados en bicicletas y, en fin, a seres temerarios que caminaban en el filo de un alambre a doce metros de altura bajo el techo de una carpa, sobre la cúpula de una iglesia o sobre el mismísimo Paso del Niágara. Pero a la vuelta del siglo diecinueve el circo perdió importancia en favor del cine, que se convirtió en el espectáculo por excelencia en la primera mitad del siglo veinte. El presente libro de Juan Felipe Leal evidencia con gran erudición el desplazamiento gradual de los “cuadros vivos”, propios del primer entretenimiento, por los “cuadros virtuales”, inherentes al segundo. El cinematógrafo se introdujo en los circos de México y convivió con actos de personajes que poseían tan sólo su cuerpo, o si acaso algún instrumento anexo para crear momentos mágicos; seres reacios a las formas de vida sedentaria y a las reglas que la religión o el Estado establecían sobre lo que los mortales deberían hacer con su físico. En este contexto cultural e histórico, el cine de los orígenes asimiló algunas de las prácticas del espectáculo circense, las adaptó a sus necesidades y las puso en acto cuando contó con locales de exhibición propios. A la vez, el circo y sus personajes se convirtieron en protagonistas del cine. En 1900 Carlos Mongrand filmó la vista Miss Muller, trapecista, y Miss Florence, del Circo Orrin; en 1904 Salvador Toscano rodó la cinta Gimnastas excéntricos, célebres artistas del Circo Orrin trabajando en el trapecio y en su triple barra fija; y en 1908 y 1911 camarógrafos anónimos tomaron las películas Acto cómico por Bell y Martinetti, y Saltarines mexicanos, respectivamente. Resumiendo, esta obra puede leerse con gran placer, tanto por su redacción amena cuanto por su extraordinaria aportación de imágenes inéditas, producto de una amplia investigación iconográfica. María Izquierdo (1902–1955) and Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) were the first two Mexican women artists to achieve international recognition. During the height of the Mexican muralist movement, they established successful careers as easel painters and created work that has become an integral part of Mexican modernism. Although the iconic Kahlo is now more famous, the two artists had comparable reputations during their lives. Both were regularly included in major exhibitions of Mexican art, and they were invariably the only women chosen for the most important professional activities and honors. In a deeply informed study that prioritizes critical analysis over biographical interpretation, Nancy Deffebach places Kahlo's and Izquierdo's oeuvres in their cultural context, examining the ways in which the artists participated in the national and artistic discourses of postrevolutionary Mexico. Through iconographic analysis of paintings and themes within each artist's oeuvre, Deffebach discusses how the artists engaged intellectually with the issues and ideas of their era, especially Mexican national identity and the role of women in society. In a time when Mexican artistic and national discourses associated the nation with masculinity, Izquierdo and Kahlo created images of women that deconstructed gender roles, critiqued the status quo, and presented more empowering alternatives for women. Como anticipa su título, este volumen de los ya indispensables Anales del cine en México, 1895-1911 se ocupa de un acontecimiento que modificó de manera radical la historia del espectáculo cinematográfico en nuestro país: la aparición en junio de 1905 de la primera sala permanente de cine en la Ciudad de México. Esta evolución del consumo del llamado “cine primitivo” se presentó como una situación “natural” y conveniente para los espectadores, quienes inmersos en su cotidianidad poco la apreciaron y valoraron en su momento. Pero desde la perspectiva del historiador de cine, el inicio de actividades del Teatro Riva Palacio (en un primer momento situado en la 3ª calle del Ayuntamiento núm. 3, y a partir de agosto de 1906, en la 2ª calle de la Independencia núm. 25) como espacio dedicado en forma exclusiva a exhibir imágenes en movimiento, reviste un significado especial, que amerita el detallado análisis que los autores del libro le dedican a los empresarios Enrique Rosas, Enrique Echániz Brust y José Austri. Y es que fue entonces cuando comenzó a gestarse esa especie de adicción, que bajo el nombre de cinefilia, impulsó el arranque de la industria cinematográfica como tal conformada por sus célebres tres sectores. Pero en este tomo también se hace un minucioso recuento de las labores del popular Circo-Teatro Orrin, que combinaba el espectáculo circense con las variedades y la exhibición de una amplia gama de películas por medio de aparatos como el “Biógrafo Edison”, el “Biógrafo Lumière”, el “Poliscopio” y el “Biógrafo Estereopticón Pathé”. Por último, Juan Felipe Leal y Eduardo Barraza dan cuenta del cinematógrafo itinerante en la provincia y siguen los pasos de otros pioneros del cine mexicano (Manuel Adams, los hermanos Cervantes, Román J. Barreiro y Salvador Toscano, Enrique Rosas, Carlos Mongrand, los hermanos Stahl y tantos más) empeñados con pasión en saciar la curiosidad, cada vez creciente, de los públicos de diversas poblaciones y capitales del interior de la república. En 1908 el cine mexicano emprendió una evolución semejante a la que tuvo lugar alrededor de 1906 en Europa y Estados Unidos tendiente a conformar organizaciones cada vez más grandes y articulaciones cada vez más complejas entre la producción, la distribución y la exhibición. Dichas propensiones se manifestaron con toda claridad en la capital de la república y, en diversos grados, en la provincia mexicana en la que el suministro permanente de películas alentó el surgimiento de innumerables salones de cinematógrafo y una actividad fílmica constante y duradera. Como es claro, los nuevos desarrollos cobraron vigencia muy desigual en el territorio nacional. Este libro de Juan Felipe Leal —1908: Tercera parte. Exhibiciones en la provincia— presenta una radiografía sustentada en una abundante información hemerográfica de su evolución en las principales ciudades de las ocho regiones en las que divide al país. Es notable que en la ciudad de Pachuca, Hidalgo, estuvieran operando simultáneamente tres salones de cinematógrafo y que uno de ellos, el Salón Verde, recibiera con regularidad el noticiario de la casa Pathé. También, que esa misma empresa tomara “vistas de movimiento” por su cuenta y que proyectara películas de gran duración, aunque todavía fueran cortometrajes. Llama la atención que en Atlixco, Puebla —centro de actividades habituales de Salvador Toscano y su familia cuyo Cinematógrafo Nacional trabajó en más de una decena de ocasiones en el Teatro José María Lafragua—, se alternara el sistema de pago “por tandas” con el sistema de pago “por funciones corridas”, al “estilo americano”. Asombra que en la capital de San Luis Potosí —en vista de que el Teatro Alarcón se había incendiado en 1900 y de que el Teatro de La Paz estaba vedado a las empresas de cinematógrafo— surgieran en 1908 cuatro modestos salones para el espectáculo que actuaban a la vez —El Dorado, El Pathé, El Salón Nuevo y El Salón Popular— y que éstos hicieran uso regular de atractivos tales como las dominicales “matinés para niños”; el obsequio de boletos para los infantes de las escuelas públicas; los sorteos y las rifas de diversa índole. En fin, este libro de Juan Felipe Leal es todo un arcón de sorpresas.
