Difficile, per un viaggiatore come Manganelli, irrimediabilmente diffidente nei confronti di monumenti, musei («Un museo nasconde una macchinazione, una prepotenza, una frode») e città ‘belle’, e attratto piuttosto dai mondi periferici, dalle forme «distratte o schive», dall’immagine che «partecipa dell’errore», fare i conti con l’Italia. E tanto più con una «cooperativa di capolavori» come Firenze, in apparenza atemporale, depotenziata, esorcizzata, non più leggibile come allegoria del mondo. Vincendo tenaci resistenze, Manganelli ha finito per affrontare Firenze nel 1982. E i reportages frutto di quel viaggio sono un ammaliante Baedeker, di cui non potrà fare a meno chiunque abbia deciso di rinnovare quell’esperimento e affrontare a sua volta la più intima e straniera delle città italiane. Perché grazie a Manganelli non vedrà i monumenti di Firenze, ma li leggerà, decifrerà l’occulta rete di rimandi che li lega, ricomporrà un misterioso disegno. E scoprirà che tali monumenti sono i contendenti di una arcana «rissa geometrica», in cui ad esempio il Battistero, edificio-diamante narcissico, irrelato e inamabile, si contrappone minacciosamente all’architettura d’aria e di danza di Santa Maria del Fiore, San Lorenzo e Santa Croce. Ma Firenze è solo uno dei nuclei di questo viaggio, che tocca, oltre alla Toscana, l’Emilia, le Marche e il Sud, in particolare l’Abruzzo, «grande produttore di silenzio», dove – ci rivela Manganelli – i monumenti stanno incastonati come gigantesche pietre di un torrente ormai asciutto e immobile, e il Parco Nazionale è un témenos, documento di una vita perduta, appartata e scostante.

This book is the result of a research project designed and carried out at the Department of Architecture, University of Florence. This book discusses urban public spaces and, more specifically, run-down, inactive micro-spaces that are barely used due to their location, dimensions, morphology or semantic characteristics. In literature, these spaces are often defined as “residual urban spaces.” A large abandoned industrial area on the outskirts of a town or a small interstitial space in a historical centre can be residual. With respect to such a broad subject matter, the book seeks to radically limit the field, concentrating on public residual spaces found in the oldest parts of cities. The book reflects on this theme and introduces a method for reading and assessment of the residuality of public spaces in historical contexts (Residuality Assessment Process) which was tested in the historical centre of Florence. It is the authors’ view that residual spaces, above all if designed according to a system logic, can go from being problems to potential activators of urban and social regeneration processes, offering a useful contribution to improve city life.

Recent studies of humanities methods and theory have drawn attention to the ambiguity of disciplinary boundaries and the need to develop interdisciplinary approaches. Nevertheless, collective works on literature are still mainly composed on the basis of a shared disciplinary paradigm, and comprised of authors who are associated with a common methodological approach. “Testo e Metodo” (in Italian) is a bold attempt to assemble research which was undertaken according to different theoretical frameworks. Scholars from Italy, Estonia and France explore the results of applying philological, historic-critical, philosophical, semiotic, geocritical, and anthropological conceptual tools to literary texts. The common rationale of all the contributions is a critical attention to the conceptual arsenal and the epistemological limits that it imposes on the research with regard to specific texts. This self-analyzing attitude on the part of the researcher exposes the particular method to a revitalizing interplay with the analyzed text(s). For scholars and teachers in the field of Italian literary studies, this book promotes innovative multidisciplinary perspectives; for students of literature, it illustrates different ways of approaching literary texts and describes the current state of the related debates.

«Che bello non essere di professione critico d’arte, ma andar vagabondando ad adocchiare tele e disegni, e dir sciocchezze» proclama Manganelli nell’affrontare la pittura del Pitocchetto. In effetti, sarebbe arduo ravvisare in lui la serietà benpensante dello specialista: diffida dei musei, frutto di «una macchinazione, una prepotenza, una frode»; dichiara che allestire una pinacoteca «non è più sensato che fare abitare tutti i Giuseppe in un solo quartiere di una città»; e lascia trapelare che ai quadri, riflesso della «mentita consistenza» del mondo, preferisce talora i disegni, appartenenti «al luogo discontinuo dei fantasmi». Ma non ci si deve ingannare: l’«incompetenza» autorizza a essere imprecisi, emotivi, irresponsabili – esattamente ciò che permette alla critica di condividere la natura misteriosa, elusiva, notturna della letteratura. Non a caso nel 1977 Manganelli ha precisato che «lo scrittore è colui che è sommamente, eroicamente incompetente di letteratura». I saggi qui riuniti saranno allora letteratura generata dall’arte – o meglio dalle arti, visto che le sue predilezioni si estendono dalle statue stele lunigianesi, «feti di dèi», all’amata pittura del Seicento e agli amici come Toti Scialoja, fino agli ex voto e alle libellule-mascotte di Lalique, numi tutelari del viaggio. E proprio in quanto letteratura, svincolata da gravami disciplinari, questi scritti riescono a sovvertire ogni idea sull’arte e a insegnarci una nuova grammatica della visione. Come quando, a proposito dei Mangiatori di patate di Van Gogh, leggiamo: «Le patate sono notte, profondità, cimitero, tomba, nero, nerità; e hanno la forma sgraziata e concentrica del mondo».
