Construction work on La Fenice began in 1791 and the opera house was opened 18 months later in 1792. The theatre has suffered two fires in its more than 200 year history; the first in 1836 (it was rebuilt and reopened in December of the same year), the second in 1996. La Fenice 1792-1996 recounts the history of the institution, founded as a company closely and continuously related to the society, politics, culture and economy of Venice. The theatre, with its two centuries of history, is one of the most significant monuments around which a large part of Venetian city life has revolved. Considered the main theatre in Venice since its foundation, it has retained a dominant and essential role both in the modern architectural development of Venice and in the history of the tastes and fashions that marked the entire nineteenth century and the early twentieth. It therefore represents not only musical history, but a chapter in the history of Venice and of Europe. The attractively styled and superbly illustrated book documents many moments in the history of the opera house that, despite the numerous publications on the subject, had remained obscure. also contains several double-page charts on a coloured background in which critics, musicologists, scholars and cultural figures examine episodes, personalities and specific and circumstantial anecdotes, helping to better define the role of La Fenice among the theatres of the world.

Italian Venice written by R. J. B. Bosworth and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-30 with History categories.

In this elegant book Richard Bosworth explores Venice—not the glorious Venice of the Venetian Republic, but from the fall of the Republic in 1797 and the Risorgimento up through the present day. Bosworth looks at the glamour and squalor of the belle époque and the dark underbelly of modernization, the two world wars, and the far-reaching oppressions of the fascist regime, through to the “Disneylandification” of Venice and the tourist boom, the worldwide attention of the biennale and film festival, and current threats of subsidence and flooding posed by global warming. He draws out major themes—the increasingly anachronistic but deeply embedded Catholic Church, the two faces of modernization, consumerism versus culture. Bosworth interrogates not just Venice’s history but its meanings, and how the city’s past has been co-opted to suit present and sometimes ulterior aims. Venice, he shows, is a city where its histories as well as its waters ripple on the surface.

How does one do justice to a building that is far more than its constituent materials, a building that is a vessel of myth, an embodiment of the dreams and legends of a city and a culture? The living reputation of the Gran Teatro La Fenice was assured from its opening in 1792. It was destined to be exceptional. Unbelievably ornate, an artwork in its own right, it has played host to the widest possible range of creative activity. From the operas of Verdi and Rossini to the postmodern dance theatre of Pina Bausch, with two centuries of music along the way, it has seen it all and made it great. And the huge fire of 1996 that levelled the building once again is just another step on the journey. The Phoenix will rise again, as before. And this volume, magnificent itself, explains how and why. It offers a full history of the Gran Teatro in words and pictures, with stills from the great productions, set designs, elevations, stories of the celebrities, singers and composers, alongside stunningly reproduced old engravings and up to the minute reportage on the recent blaze. A book world that will endure.

The Oxford Handbook Of Faust In Music written by Lorna Fitzsimmons and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-08 with Music categories.

Since its emergence in sixteenth-century Germany, the magician Faust's quest has become one of the most profound themes in Western history. Though variants are found across all media, few adaptations have met with greater acclaim than in music. Bringing together more than two dozen authors in a foundational volume, The Oxford Handbook of Faust in Music testifies to the spectacular impact the Faust theme has exerted over the centuries. The Handbook's three-part organization enables readers to follow the evolution of Faust in music across time and stylistic periods. Part I explores symphonic, choral, chamber, and solo Faust works by composers from Beethoven to Schnittke. Part II discusses the range of Faustian operas, and Part III examines Faust's presence in ballet and musical theater. Illustrating the interdisciplinary relationships between music and literature and the fascinating tapestry of intertextual relationships among the works of Faustian music themselves, the volume suggests that rather than merely retelling the story of Faust, these musical compositions contribute significant insights on the tale and its unrivalled cultural impact.

Opera And Sovereignty written by Martha Feldman and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-05 with Music categories.

Performed throughout Europe during the 1700s, Italian heroic opera, or opera seria, was the century’s most significant musical art form, profoundly engaging such figures as Handel, Haydn, and Mozart. Opera and Sovereignty is the first book to address this genre as cultural history, arguing that eighteenth-century opera seria must be understood in light of the period’s social and political upheavals. Taking an anthropological approach to European music that’s as bold as it is unusual, Martha Feldman traces Italian opera’s shift from a mythical assertion of sovereignty, with its festive forms and rituals, to a dramatic vehicle that increasingly questioned absolute ideals. She situates these transformations against the backdrop of eighteenth-century Italian culture to show how opera seria both reflected and affected the struggles of rulers to maintain sovereignty in the face of a growing public sphere. In so doing, Feldman explains why the form had such great international success and how audience experiences of the period differed from ours today. Ambitiously interdisciplinary, Opera and Sovereignty will appeal not only to scholars of music and anthropology, but also to those interested in theater, dance, and the history of the Enlightenment.

Mozart written by Robert Gutman and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-31 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Mozart: A Cultural Biography is a fresh interpretation of a musical genius, meticulously researched and gracefully written. It places Mozart's life and music in the context of the intellectual, political, and artistic currents of eighteenth-century Europe. Even as he delves into philosophic and aesthetic questions, Robert Gutman keeps in sight, clearly and firmly, the composer and his works. He discusses the major genres in which Mozart worked - chamber music; liturgical, theatre, and keyboard compositions; concerto; symphony; opera; and oratorio. All of these riches unfold within the framework of the composer's brief but remarkable life. With Gutman's informed and sensitive handling, Mozart emerges in a light more luminous than in previous renderings. The composer was an affectionate and generous man to family and friends, self-deprecating, witty, winsome, but also an austere moralist, incisive and purposeful.Mozart is both an extraordinary portrait of a man in his time and a brilliant distillation of musical thought.

Venice Reconsidered written by John Jeffries Martin and has been published by Johns Hopkins University Press+ORM this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-05-01 with History categories.

This collection of essays on centuries of culture and politics is “likely to become a landmark in Venetian historiography” (The Historical Journal). Venice Reconsidered offers a dynamic portrait of Venice from the establishment of the Republic at the end of the thirteenth century to its fall to Napoleon in 1797. In contrast to earlier efforts to categorize Venice’s politics as strictly republican and its society as rigidly tripartite and hierarchical, the scholars in this volume present a more fluid and complex interpretation of Venetian culture. Drawing on a variety of disciplines—history, art history, and musicology—these essays present innovative variants of the myth of Venice—that nearly inexhaustible repertoire of stories Venetians told about themselves.
