It would be an understatement to say that the New Science is difficult to read. Most contemporary readers conclude with a Russian scholar that Vico's thought "is expressed in extremely naive forms, profound thoughts are interspersed with all sorts of pedantic trifles, the exposition is very confusing, yet it is beyond doubt that the basic idea is a work of genius. " 1 There can be no disputing the fact that the New Science is difficult to read; the dispute emerges in the effort to explain how a work which is at once "confusing," "naive" and "pedantic," can be a "work of genius. " The purpose of this brief study is to suggest that a good deal of the confusion can be dispelled when the New Science is read with care and an eye to the possibility of two levels of meaning. We must never forget that Vico was a professor of rhetoric and was therefore familiar with the techniques of cautious writing. It is our conviction that the New Science is an exoteric book which means that it contains two levels of meaning: one which conveys a popular and orthodox message, and another which 2 conveys a philosophical message addressed to philosophers. A large number of contemporary scholars tend to minimize or dismiss this type of writing.

Excerpt from The Philosophy of Giambattista Vico My reason for believing that a new exposition of Vico's philosophy is required may easily be inferred from the observations on the effects of his work and the biographical notes which form respectively the second and fourth appendices to this volume. Here I merely wish to state that my exposition is not meant for a summary of Vico's writings work by work and part by part. It rather presupposes an acquaintance with these writings, and, where that is lacking, is intended to induce the reader to procure them in order to follow better and to check the interpretation and estimate of them here offered. On this supposition, though I have made free use of my author's actual words, especially in the chapters dealing with history, I have not thought it desirable to mark them as quotations except where it was important to emphasise the precise phrase of the original. I have in general combined such passages from fragments scattered over a wide field, sometimes abbreviating, sometimes amplifying, and always freely adding words and phrases of my own by way of commentary: and the continual use of quotation marks would merely have shown up in a manner more wearisome than valuable the reverse side of my embroidery, which any reader who so desires can study by the help of the references given at the end of the book. La presente edición, preparada por Carmen Baños y con un prólogo de Gustavo Bueno, es la publicación póstuma de la tesis doctoral del autor, hasta ahora inédita. El libro, compuesto por doce capítulos, se estructura en tres partes. La primera, “crítico metodológica”, se hace imprescindible para poder hacer explícitos los “supuestos” desde los que se abordará el estatuto gnoseológico de la obra de Vico, que atenderá fundamentalmente a dilucidar la “novedad” y tipo de “ciencia” a la que Vico alude con el rótulo Ciencia Nueva. La segunda parte está dedicada a cuestiones gnoseológicas y sus capítulos se distribuyen en dos secciones: una primera sección, en la que las múltiples problemáticas que la obra de Vico suscita se tratan desde el análisis sistemático de la estructura argumentativa de la Scienza Nuova, poniéndose de relieve los criterios “ejercidos” por el propio Vico y analizando el campo fenoménico de los materiales que Vico presenta en la Tabla cronológica que encabeza la Ciencia Nueva. La tercera parte trata de cuestiones ontológicas. La última sección, “génesis sistemática de laScienza Nuova”, tras detenidos análisis va dejando ver cómo la fundamentación del Derecho de Vico logra que cristalice definitivamente la Ciencia Nueva, pues tal fundamentación es fundamentación antropológica del Derecho, que Vico “representa” desde un punto de vista histórico asociado a sus “cuatro autores” (Tácito, Platón, Bacon, Grocio). La Antropología filosófica de Vico se puede entender así como reductora de la perspectiva histórica y se resuelve en una “ciencia media de la humanidad” que es fin de esa intención de Ciencia Nueva en la que Vico ha perseverado “representándola” de manera constante. Toda la interpretación global de la obra de Vico, que aquí se nos ofrece, está hecha desde las coordenadas del materialismo filosófico de Gustavo Bueno. Long a shadowy figure in the history of philosophy, it was only in the twentieth century that Giambattista Vico (1668-1744) achieved renown as a major and original thinker. There has been a steadily widening interest in this figure who, had he been known in his own day, might have altered the course of European thought. Much has been written in an attempt to clarify his historical stature, but in Time and Idea A. Robert Caponigri approaches Vico's thought in terms of its relevance to problems of modern philosophy. Viewing the essential problem of twentieth-century philosophy as the elimination of human subjectivity from nature, Caponigri shows how Vico offers us a principle for the vindication of our own spirituality through history.In Caponigri's reading, Vico establishes an absolute dichotomy between nature and history. The latter is seen as the sum of the active, fully realized human spirit and thus the context for the true understanding of human nature. Although Vico's major work, The New Science, incorporates vast amounts of concrete historical research and contruction, Caponigri's focus is on Vico's theoretical apparatus. Following an introductory biographical chapter, the author turns to Vico's theory of history, emphasizing its importance as a genuine philosophical undertaking rather than mere methodology. Caponigri shows how the speculative problem of history first presented itself to Vico in matters of jurisprudence and natural law from which he derived the concepts of time and idea as the terms in which the historical process of culture becomes comprehensible. He then introduces the human subject as the principle of the synthesis of time and idea, and discusses the Vichian concept of the "modification of the human mind," and his idea of "providence" as the rectifying principle of human history.First published in 1953, Time and Idea remains an essential contribution to the ongoing dialog on Vico's work.
