L’opera offre una delineazione globale della filosofia di Emmanuel Levinas, morto a quasi novant’anni sul finire del 1995 e ormai da annoverarsi tra le grandi figure non solo della filosofia ma dell’intera cultura del novecento. Lo stile del nostro lavoro cerca di coniugare la rigorosità scientifica dell’interpretazione con un’esposizione piana e progressiva, rivolta anche ai non filosofi di professione e agli studenti universitari. Per un verso si è quindi cercato di evitare la banalizzazione di Levinas in poche formule stereotipe. Per altro verso, coscienti della complessità del pensiero e della scrittura di Levinas, si è cercato di condurre progressivamente a leggere e gustare direttamente le sue opere fondamentali, ormai veri e propri “classici” ma di difficile lettura e comprensione per chi non vi fosse preparato in modo appropriato. Il nostro lavoro, messo alla prova in alcune sue parti in forma di dispense universitarie, si presenta quindi anche come un’introduzione alla lettura di tali opere e come un loro commentario. Levinas non ha semplicemente contrapposto l’esperienza religiosa alla filosofia, ma ha cercato di scoprire nella prima le valenze umanamente universali e di riportare la seconda alla sua tradizione più valida. La scelta di concentrarci sull’itinerario “filosofico” di Levinas non ha quindi il significato di lasciare da parte un aspetto del suo pensiero, bensì quello di andare alla sua sostanza, studiandolo e analizzandolo per quello che ha voluto essere: un pensiero valido per tutti e comunicabile a tutti.
