La desacralizzazione e la scristianizzazione accompagnano il destino dell'uomo occidentale. La civiltà del capitalismo assoluto, che basa il suo dominio sul nichilismo relativista e sulla volontà di potenza tecnoscientifica, non solo non ha più bisogno di affidarsi, come un tempo, alla religione quale strumento di potere: deve necessariamente promuoverne l'estinzione. Con il suo richiamo al sacro e alla trascendenza, alla dignità dell'uomo come immagine di Dio e all'idea di una verità non utilitaristica, la religione cristiana resta infatti una "potenza frenante" rispetto al nulla della civiltà merciforme e del fanatismo economico. Per Diego Fusaro questo pernicioso processo di desacralizzazione si manifesta al livello più preoccupante nel pontificato di Francesco, e nel suo tentativo di scendere a patti con la civiltà dei consumi, assimilandone il lessico e la visione del mondo - anche se in salsa progressista. Come la perestrojka proposta da Gorbacëv per "ammodernare" il comunismo produsse il suo scioglimento nel capitalismo, così la modernizzazione combattuta da Ratzinger e difesa da Bergoglio non porta il cristianesimo alla sopravvivenza, ma alla dissoluzione. La fine del cristianesimo è un atto d'accusa filosofico contro la fede "liquida" e low cost, e insieme un invito a riscoprire il messaggio di Pasolini, secondo cui «l'opposizione al nuovo potere non può che essere un'opposizione anche di carattere religioso». Per Fusaro, contro lo spirito del tempo presente è irrinunciabile un'alleanza tra la Chiesa resistente al modernismo nichilista e le forze laiche anticapitalistiche che non intendono soggiacere al consumismo imperante.

Tale fase è stata centrale per la storia di molte regioni e il caso della Transilvania conferma l’importanza di questo delicato momento storico in cui si sono rivisti i confini di molti Stati europei. In qualche modo il libro si collega al precedente volume Ardeal: le origini della Transilvania romena, edito da Edizioni Nuova Cultura nel 2011, di cui prosegue l’analisi, soffermandosi sulle implicazioni del cambiamento del confine, tanto per le relazioni bilaterali fra Romania e Ungheria, quanto per la vita e il contesto socio-economico della popolazione locale.

La parola profetica ed escatologica – che fu quella delle prime origini cristiane – è perduta da secoli: la perdita del linguaggio è la perdita dei contenuti, che, attraverso le diverse trascrizioni, si diluiscono, diventano ambigui e infine vengono abbandonati come insignificanti. Eppure il linguaggio della immemorabile religione apocalittica e messianica non è mai morto del tutto e le sue varie reviviscenze segnano dei risvegli – fatalmente parziali e contraddittori – nella storia: l’Islam, i movimenti eretici medioevali, il sogno degli utopisti all'alba del mondo moderno, i socialismi e le rivoluzioni, fino alle sètte e ai nuovi miti dei popoli ex coloniali. Ciò che questa parola dell’inizio e della fine può esprimere non è misurabile solo con i metri culturali di cui dispone l’attuale civiltà, strumenti nati tardivamente in una fase di riflessione critica sui grandi temi oggi scomparsi all'orizzonte. Altra è la dimensione a cui quella parola si riferisce, e in essa vuole porsi questo libro. È una dimensione che esige risposte estreme e perentorie, perciò forse inudibili: come è inudibile tutto ciò che non è fondato sul già acquisito, sul conforme, in definitiva sulla permanenza della situazione data. Ma i significati necessari stanno necessariamente al di là di quella sterminata accettazione passiva che è, ai nostri giorni, la cultura. In tre parti distinte di un unico discorso vengono qui considerati i segni sparsi delle cose perdute eppure inevitabilmente e ciecamente cercate nel mondo contemporaneo: il nucleo essenziale del messaggio di Gesù attraverso un commento delle parole che gli vengono attribuite dal primo dei Vangeli, quello di Marco; la vicenda palese o sotterranea percorsa dall'attesa del «regno di Dio» nelle metamorfosi profane subite lungo i venti secoli della sua storia; la situazione paradossale del presente, dove riecheggiano, contraffatte, esperienze antiche e incancellabili.
