The Horatian formula prodesse et delectare was extremely influential in the production of texts across various languages and genres. While indeed didactic elements can be attested to in almost any medieval text, and while medieval literature displays a range of possibilities to teach and instruct, the scope of the present volume is more closely focused on explicitly didactic literature. This volume combines contributions that analyse didactic literature in high medieval Europe from different vantage points. They open new perspectives on education as a working principle or legitimizing strategy in the heterogeneous forms of writing intended to convey knowledge. This broad thematic, linguistic and geographical scope enables us to view didactic literature as the universal phenomenon it was and prompts us to understand its influence on many aspects of society in high medieval Europe and beyond. While the contributions explore case studies predominantly from this period of transition and the expansion of the categories of knowledge, they also trace some of these developments into the later Middle Ages to spotlight the lasting influence of high medieval teaching and learning in literature. The way medieval writers combine ‘the pleasant’ with ‘the useful’ is this book’s main question.

This third volume in the series is devoted to presenting and interpreting the metallurgical evidence from Ban Chiang, northeast Thailand, in the broader regional context. Because the production of metal artifacts must engage numerous communities in order to acquire and process the raw materials and then create and distribute products, understanding metals in past societies requires a regional perspective. This is the first book to compile, summarize, and synthesize the English-language copper production and exchange evidence available so far from Thailand and Laos in a thorough and systematic manner. Chapters by Vincent C. Pigott and Thomas O. Pryce examine in detail the mining and smelting of copper in several sites, and the lead-isotope evidence for the sourcing of artifacts found in two of the consumption sites included in the study. Another chapter compiles the metal consumption evidence, including results of technical studies on prehistoric metals recovered from more than 35 sites excavated in central and northeast Thailand. This compilation demonstrates important regional variation in chaînes opératoires, allowing explication and synthesis of the technological traditions found in this region during prehistory. The review and compilation sheds new light on the social and economic context for the adoption and development of metallurgy in this part of the world. One key insight is that Thailand presents a case for a "community-driven bronze age," where the choices of peaceful local communities, not elites or centralized political entities, shaped how metal technological systems were implemented in this region. This fresh perspective on the role of metallurgy in ancient societies contributes to an expanded global understanding of how humans have engaged metal technologies, contributing to debunking the conventional paradigm that emphasized a top-down view and a standardized metallurgical sequence, a paradigm that has dominated archeometallurgical studies for the last century or more. Il convegno, dal titolo Kosmos nel XXI Secolo, dedicato alla celebrazione dei 250 anni dalla nascita di Alexander von Humboldt, si è proposto come una rivisitazione in chiave attuale dell'ultimo lavoro di Humboldt e suo testamento spirituale Kosmos – Entwurf einer physischen Weltbeschreibung. Partendo dalla immagine integrata e coerente del cosmo proposta da Humboldt, il convegno si è delineato come una vivace occasione di dibattito interdisciplinare su questioni di interesse globale e di grande attualità. Temi inerenti al fabbisogno energetico, alla biodiversità, ai viaggi, alla comunicazione, alle migrazioni, alla poesia, alla storia e alla geografia sono stati affrontati con interesse e spirito costruttivo tra discipline scientifiche e umanistiche nel suggestivo contesto di Villa Vigoni e del lago di Como. Il convegno, sostenuto dalla fondazione tedesca Alexander von Humboldt, è stato aperto e concluso dai rappresentanti istituzionali della Repubblica Federale di Germania ed ha avuto una ampia partecipazione nazionale ed internazionale. Dieser Sammelband enthält die Beiträge zur nationalen Konferenz der italienischen Alexander von Humboldt Gesellschaft, die vom 11. bis 14. April 2019 im Deutsch-Italienischen Zentrum für Europäischen Dialog Villa Vigoni in Loveno di Menaggio (Como) stattfand. Die Konferenz mit dem Titel Kosmos im XXI. Jahrhundert widmete sich der 250 Jahr-Feier des Geburtstags Alexander von Humboldts und bot somit einen aktuellen Blick auf Humboldts letztes Werk und sein geistiges Erbe: Kosmos – Entwurf einer physischen Weltbeschreibung. Ausgehend von Humboldts Bild des Kosmos, bot die Konferenz eine lebendige Gelegenheit für eine interdisziplinäre Debatte über Fragen von globalem und aktuellem Interesse. Fragen der Energienachfrage, Biodiversität, Reisen, Kommunikation und Migration, Poesie und Geschichte sowie Geographie wurden behandelt und in einem interessanten und konstruktiven Vergleich zwischen den Disziplinen im wissenschaftlich und humanistisch Kontext von Villa Vigoni diskutiert. Die Konferenz, unterstützt von der Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, wurde von den institutionellen Vertretern der Bundesrepublik Deutschland eröffnet und hatte eine große nationale sowie internationale Beteiligung.

In qualche modo il libro si collega al precedente volume Ardeal: le origini della Transilvania romena, edito da Edizioni Nuova Cultura nel 2011, di cui prosegue l’analisi, soffermandosi sulle implicazioni del cambiamento del confine, tanto per le relazioni bilaterali fra Romania e Ungheria, quanto per la vita e il contesto socio-economico della popolazione locale.
