La Fontana de Oro es la primera novela de Benito Pérez Galdós y se publicó en 1870. La acción transcurre en la ciudad de Madrid durante los años del Trienio Constitucional (1820-1823). Enmarcada en el reinado de Fernando VII, en sus páginas Galdós narra acontecimientos como el levantamiento del general Riego. Se relata también la posterior llegada a Madrid el 24 de mayo de 1823 de los Cien Mil Hijos de San Luis para restablecer la tiranía del monarca. Reuniones clandestinas de logias masónicas y «sectas ultramontanas»; actuaciones de grandes oradores como Antonio Alcalá-Galiano; escaramuzas entre milicianos liberales y realistas; fusilamientos en masa y ejecuciones en la plaza de la Cebada tras la victoria absolutista. La trama principal de la novela se centra en la relación amorosa entre dos jovenes de orígenes e ideologías muy diferentes. Lázaro es romántico y liberal, mientras que Clara es una joven huérfana que vive con su tío, de pensamiento absolutista y muy intolerante. Es una obra de entorno urbano, concretamente del Madrid fernandino. Se trata de una idéntica a la que vivía Pérez Galdós, en la que el famoso café es el escenario principal. Toma su título del café situado cerca de la Puerta del Sol. Allí se reunían a artistas y tribuna oratoria para políticos liberales. La Fontana de Oro es una novela en la que no faltan ni el realismo del momento ni cierto costumbrismo. También es visible una vocación histórica y política que lleva a incorporar personajes reales y acontecimientos históricos, unos rasgos que Pérez Galdós desarrollará posteriormente en los Episodios Nacionales.
