Donkeys carried Christ into Jerusalem while in Greek myth they transported Hephaistos up to Mount Olympos and Dionysos into battle against the Giants. They were probably the first animals that people ever rode, as well as the first used on a large-scale as beasts of burden. Associated with kingship and the gods in the ancient Near East, they have been (and in many places still are) a core technology for moving people and goods over both short and long distances, as well as a supplier of muscle power for threshing and grinding grain, pressing olives, raising water, ploughing fields, and pulling carts, to name just a few of the uses to which they have been put. Yet despite this, they remain one of the least studied, and most widely ignored, of all domestic animals, consigned to the margins of history like so many of those who still depend upon them. Spanning the globe and extending from the donkey's initial domestication up to the present, this book seeks to remedy this situation by using archaeological evidence, in combination with insights from history and anthropology, to resituate the donkey (and its hybrid offspring such as the mule) in the unfolding of human history, looking not just at what donkeys and mules did, but also at how people have thought about and understood them. Intended in part for university researchers and students working in the broad fields of world history, archaeology, animal history, and anthropology, but it should also interest anyone keen to learn more about one of the most widespread and important of the animals that people have domesticated.

The years between the accession of the house of Bourbon to the Spanish throne in 1700 and the coronation of Carlos III in 1759 have often been bundled up, and dismissed, together with the later years of Habsburg rule. Distinguiendo tres períodos en la cronología de las mismas: Uno clásico entre el ¡Dios lo quiere! del papa Urbano II en 1095 y la muerte prematura de San Luis en 1270, cuando se pone en práctica la operación libertadora de Jerusalén a lo largo de ocho campañas, en consonancia con la doctrina de la guerra santa cultivada en el imaginario del feudalismo. Otro moderno, entre la caída de Constantinopla en 1453 y el segundo cerco de Viena en 1683, donde las nuevas realidades políticas y religiosas van distanciando la idea redentoria de su matriz medieval hacia nuevas formulaciones. De manera que el caballero andante toma el relevo del paladín cruzado y las órdenes caballerescas lo hacen de las militares. Y otro contemporáneo, que ha llegado hasta hoy mismo en forma de perversión del mito original, utilizado por dictadores para legitimar sus guerras y regímenes, por extremistas para reivindicar sus acciones armadas y por el lenguaje subliminal de la publicidad.

El presente libro rescata del olvido la historia del banco más importante de la Valencia de finales del siglo XV, que mantuvo relaciones financieras con las grandes ciudades europeas y con empresas como el banco de los Medici. El estudio se organiza en dos épocas, articuladas en tres capítulos: 1) la instalación en Valencia del padre, Martí Ruiz, a principios de siglo (1417), una época en que la capital ejercía su influencia sobre un extenso territorio peninsular; 2) la internacionalización y reconversión empresarial del negocio familiar durante la dirección de los «hereus d’en Martí Roís», sus tres hijos varones, que llegaron a disfrutar de la condición aristocrática, y 3) el hundimiento, con la huida (1487) y la persecución inquisitorial, como resultado de su condición conversa, que permitió al Patrimonio Regio apropiarse de una parte significativa de sus activos financieros y su patrimonio.
