Los siete barrios de la ciudad se establecieron desde la fundación de San Luis Potosí en el año de 1592, cuando se erigió el barrio de Asunción de Tlaxcalilla. Después, a lo largo de los siglos XVI y XVII se constituyeron como tales los seis barrios restantes: Santiago (1593), Tequisquiapan (1593), San Miguelito (1597), San Sebastián (1603), San Cristóbal del Montecillo (1600) y San Juan de Guadalupe (1616). En esta segunda edición, ampliada, se llevó a cabo una revisión y se agregó el apartado titulado calles del barrio así como nuevos datos que se consideró enriquecería la información hasta ahora trabajada.
