El texto que tiene el lector en sus manos es un trabajo que tiene como propósito fundamental ofrecer una visión de conjunto sobre un nuevo campo en el que se ha venido desarrollando la disciplina de la historia a lo largo de las últimas décadas: el de una historia que se interesa por el estudio del presente. La proyección que en la actualidad se advierte en dirección de este nuevo campo del conocimiento, no constituye una cuestión baladí ni para la historia ni para las ciencias sociales en general, porque desde aquellas coyunturas decimonónicas en las que se dio inicio al proceso de profesionalización de la disciplina en el Viejo Continente, al estudio del presente, en general, le fue asignado un lugar bastante marginal en los programas académicos, con lo cual este campo quedó principalmente en manos de otras disciplinas y, desde ese entonces, fuerte y persistente ha sido la desaprobación cuando los nóveles historiadores han querido incursionar en las vicisitudes de los problemas referidos a este marco temporal. Todavía hoy en día sigue siendo bastante reducido el número de colegas que conoce o se interesa por los entretelones de las propuestas que en torno al presente se han ido tejiendo. Dentro del gremio todavía es usual encontrar historiadores que expresan extrañeza e incluso cierto desconcierto o malestar cuando escuchan hablar de una historia enfocada a comprender y a explicar el presente, circunstancia que demuestra que todavía sigue siendo estrecha la filiación que se establece entre este tipo de saber y el estudio del pasado.

Este libro es producto del trabajo desarrollado desde 2015 por el Seminario Permanente de Historia Contemporánea y del Tiempo Presente en México, cuya intención ha sido reflexionar sobre esta perspectiva historiográfica. Se trata de un campo todavía difuso y lleno de polémicas, en el que aún no existe una propuesta teórica acabada. La intención es mostrar cómo puede estudiarse la historia del tiempo presente desde realidades distintas a la violencia o la represión que caracteriza, por ejemplo, a la historiografía de la historia reciente en los países del Cono Sur. El abordaje de esta perspectiva en México presenta sus propios retos teórico-metodológicos y recupera la importancia de la memoria, la historia oral, el surgimiento de nuevas fuentes como las visuales y las digitales, la interdisciplinariedad, el estudio de procesos que no han concluido, la subjetividad, la separación objeto sujeto y se centra en el tiempo vivido por el investigador o por la generación que le antecedió. En esta obra se reflexiona sobre la especificidad de la historia, la subjetividad, la incertidumbre, el tiempo, el presente, la experiencia, la búsqueda del sentido y la conciencia histórica, la distancia personal en torno a lo estudiado, la hiperinformación, las memorias, las formas del recuerdo, la conciencia que aflora en la narración oral, cómo leer los testimonios, la responsabilidad del historiador frente al presente, el análisis del discurso y las diversas formas como se experimenta el trabajo de la historia que nos es coetánea.--back cover.

He uncovers the motives for monetary union in Paris and Bonn. He walks in mass demonstrations in Belgrade and travels through the killing fields of Kosovo. Occasionally, he even becomes an actor in a drama he describes: debating Germany with Margaret Thatcher or the role of the intellectual with Václav Havel in Prague. Ranging from Vienna to Saint Petersburg, from Britain to Ruthenia, Garton Ash reflects on how "the single great conflict" of the cold war has been replaced by many smaller ones. And he asks what part the United States still has to play.
