Pius XII (Eugenio Pacelli) went through the most difficult years of the European and world history of the 20th century. He came to supreme responsibility in the Church with a long diplomatic experience. His figure, in a crucial period for the history of the world, stood tall at the head of the great force of world Catholicism, drawing attention for the austerity of his life, for the successes in the government of the Church, for his actions and above all, the political problems of the world. Everyone had to admit it and even the diatribes of the Vatican's opponents --such as the attacks by the communist and anticlerical press-- were very powerful arguments that enlarged the role played by Pius XII. His voice, lonely in the silence and darkness into which Europe fell, was that of the only sovereign on the continent who had the courage to ask for respect for treaties, an end to aggression, equal treatment for minorities and cessation of religious persecution. No one but Pius XII was able to speak for peace. This book, divided into two parts, offers in the first one a summary of his pontificate, highlighting his attempts to prevent World War II, his public interventions against the conflict, the humanitarian work of the Holy See, the Pope's fight against paganism and atheism, and against communism. In the second, centered on the title of the book, it is affirmed that Pius XII made more efforts in defense of the Jews than any humanitarian organization, the great work of assistance in favor of the Jews is documented and the black legend is analyzed on the attitude of Pius XII. The question is answered: when was this legend born and what may have been its causes? Testimonies of Jews about the Pope and the most recent documents that confirm that he generously helped the Jews are provided. Pius XII has been accused of silence in the face of that tragedy, but he concluded that an act of public protest on his part would not have achieved the slightest result and would certainly have aggravated the persecution. In addition, a public protest would have prevented the Church from carrying out its hidden work of assistance to the Hebrews.

A Moral Reckoning written by Daniel Jonah Goldhagen and has been published by Vintage this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-12-18 with History categories.

With his first book, Hitler’s Willing Executioners, Daniel Jonah Goldhagen dramatically revised our understanding of the role ordinary Germans played in the Holocaust. Now he brings his formidable powers of research and argument to bear on the Catholic Church and its complicity in the destruction of European Jewry. What emerges is a work that goes far beyond the familiar inquiries—most of which focus solely on Pope Pius XII—to address an entire history of hatred and persecution that culminated, in some cases, in an active participation in mass-murder. More than a chronicle, A Moral Reckoning is also an assessment of culpability and a bold attempt at defining what actions the Church must take to repair the harm it did to Jews—and to repair itself. Impressive in its scholarship, rigorous in its ethical focus, the result is a book of lasting importance.

The impact of events in Nazi Germany and Europe during World War II was keenly felt in neutral Argentina among its predominantly Catholic population and its significant Jewish minority. The Catholic Church and the Jews, Argentina, 1933-1945 considers the images of Jews presented in standard Catholic teaching of that era, the attitudes of the lower clergy and faithful toward the country?s Jewish citizens, and the response of the politically influential Church hierarchy to the national debate on accepting Jewish refugees from Europe. The issue was complicated by such factors as the position taken by the Vatican, Argentina?s unstable political situation, and the sizeable number of citizens of German origin who were Nazi sympathizers eager to promote German interests. ø Argentina?s self-perception was as a ?Catholic? country. Though there were few overtly anti-Jewish acts, traditional stereotypes and prejudice were widespread and only a few voices in the Catholic community confronted the established attitudes. ø

Spaniards in Mauthausen is the first study of the cultural legacy of Spaniards imprisoned and killed during the Second World War in the Nazi concentration camp Mauthausen. By examining narratives about Spanish Mauthausen victims over the past seventy years, author Sara J. Brenneis provides a historical, critical, and chronological analysis of a virtually unknown body of work. Diverse accounts from survivors of Mauthausen, chronicled in letters, artwork, photographs, memoirs, fiction, film, theatre, and new media, illustrate how Spaniards have become cognizant of the Spanish government's relationship to the Nazis and its role in the victimization of Spanish nationals in Mauthausen. As political prisoners, their numbers and experiences differ significantly from the millions of Jews exterminated by Hitler, yet the Spaniards in Mauthausen were nevertheless objects of Nazi violence and witnesses to the Holocaust.

This edited collection delves into the horrors of November 1938 and to what degree they portended the Holocaust, demonstrating the varied reactions of Western audiences to news about the pogrom against the Jews. A pattern of stubborn governmental refusal to help German Jews to any large degree emerges throughout the book. Much of this was in response to uncertain domestic economic conditions and underlying racist attitudes towards Jews. Contrasting this was the outrage expressed by ordinary people around the world who condemned the German violence and challenged the policy of Appeasement being advanced by Great Britain and France towards Adolf Hitler’s Nazi German government at the time. Contributors employ multiple media sources to make their arguments, and compare these with official government records. For the first time, a collection on Kristallnacht has taken a truly transnational approach, giving readers a fuller understanding of how the events of November 1938 were understood around the Western world.
