El análisis de las tendencias a escala global enmarcadas por las secuelas de la crisis económica mundial de 2007-2008, la emergencia de nuevos riesgos socia- les asociados a la economía postindustrial, la pérdida de centralidad del trabajo como eje de la integración social, el cambio tecnológico, la heterogeneidad histórica de los sistemas de protección social y la evolución de los niveles de gasto social, se conjugan con el examen a escala regional en América Latina en torno a las implicaciones sobre las agendas sociales de los dos giros políticos ocurridos en varios países durante el transcurso del presente siglo –primero a la izquierda y luego a la derecha–, lo que lleva a plantear diferentes escenarios y proponer posibles rutas más progresistas. Esta obra discurre alrededor de una crisis de época, busca contribuir a pensar desde América Latina el presente y el futuro de las sociedades contemporáneas, y a analizar sus grandes problemas, tanto aquellos que la historia arrastra sin resolver, como los que se desprenden de la nueva constelación de riesgos sociales que caracterizan nuestra época. La experiencia tras cuatro decenios de predominio del neoliberalismo permite observar los resultados de una apuesta fundamentalista por el mercado y los individuos, recapitular sus efectos sobre la distribución social de recursos económicos, políticos y simbólicos, y el crecimiento exponencial y global de las desigualdades, que conlleva una erosión peligrosa de la cohesión social en múltiples escalas. Quienes colaboran en este libro dialogan y hacen una reflexión crítica alrededor de la agenda propuesta desde las Naciones Unidas a través de los Objetivos del Desarrollo Sostenible en temas cruciales como la eliminación de la pobreza, la reducción de desigualdades, el trabajo decente, la igualdad de género, paz, justicia e instituciones sólidas, y la protección del medio ambiente; pero además revelan problemáticas centrales de la Cuestión Social en la actualidad provenientes de ciclos de reformas sociales contradictorias entre sí.
