Quando il giovane milanese Aleardo, di famiglia ricca, nobile e illuminata, decide di approdare con il suo yacht nella sperduta isola di Ocaña, al largo del Portogallo, non sa quale inusitata avventura, e quale incontro fatale, lo attendano. Fino a quel momento, egli è «il compratore di isole», sempre incerto su quale comprare, perché Aleardo è sì facoltoso, ma anche rispettoso della generale dignità del creato e non vorrebbe turbarlo con indiscrete iniziative. Come giocando, un suo amico editore lo aveva sfidato a fornirgli un manoscritto capace di risvegliare i lettori intorpiditi per eccesso di offerte: e precisamente «le confessioni di un qualche pazzo, magari innamorato di una iguana». Appunto l’iguana attende Aleardo nell’isola di Ocaña, sotto forma di una «bestiola verdissima e alta quanto un bambino, dall’apparente aspetto di una lucertola gigante, ma vestita da donna, con una sottanina scura, un corsetto bianco, palesemente lacero e antico, e un grembialetto fatto di vari colori». Quell’iguana, come la prima materia dei testi alchemici, è ciò che di più vecchio e insieme ciò che di più giovane si possa trovare nella sostanza del mondo, è la natura stessa nel suo perenne invito alla «fraternità con l’orrore». Intorno a questa principessa-servetta e al suo principe illuministico e bisognoso di iniziazione la Ortese ha intessuto una perfetta favola romantica, genere fra i più ardui, che già aveva tentato vari grandi scrittori di lingua tedesca, da Novalis a Hofmannsthal, mentre in Italia non sembra aver attirato nessuno, forse anche per la profonda estraneità della nostra letteratura alla vena fosforeggiante del romantico. "L’Iguana" fu pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1965, incontrando una generale incomprensione. Oggi sappiamo che questo romanzo, nella sua impeccabile commistione di incanto e ironia, è destinato a rimanere un approdo felice per chiunque ami la letteratura.
