This book examines strategies of transformation (becomings, image-making, and the phantasmagoric) that figure in four stories and a novel by Gothic fiction writer Pilar Pedraza (Spain, 1951). While critics have long associated the Bildungsroman with Gothic fiction, this study takes a close look at the developmental process itself: the means by which a protagonist, young or old, might transcend a deprived status to achieve a complete sense of self. Pedraza's works imply that, regardless of the path followed, a character's ability to think differently is crucial to progress. The fixed image, representative of an inflexible, socially determined mindset, arises as an obstacle to maturation. In "Días de perros," for example, a triangular arrangement of coins in a cigar box elucidates the connection between individual lives and the social order or assemblage. Literary texts, such as this one, serve as collective assemblages of enunciation, capable of exposing fixed images as powerful instruments of control. "Tristes Ayes del Águila Mejicana" discovers fixed images among the icons of Colonial Spain's exequias reales, used in this case to territorialize the evolving identity of indigenous peoples. The territory thatPedraza's fictionbest illuminates is, in reality, the image. When images remain fixed or territorialized, they uncannily infect the assemblages over which they exert influence. Placing emphasis on images that impact women, Pedraza, in "Anfiteatro," for example, deconstructs "cat woman," which, albeit a potentially subversive image in its early manifestations, eventually ceases to empower the feminine, lashing it, rather, to a burdensome stereotype. Territorialized, the feminine must, then, break free from the image in order to discover representations more capable of illuminating present-day challenges. The phrase "dark assemblages," drawn from Deleuze and Guattari's A Thousand Plateaus, gestures toward societal stagnation as a decisive factor in individual evolvement. Gothic fiction represents an uneven landscape, in that it tenders the possibility of a social critique yet, equally well, lends itself to the exclusion of specific identities and practices that society brands as anomalous. Pedraza's Gothic fiction is, indeed, subversive, in that it offers readers original perceptions of modern day people and the assemblages, dark or otherwise, to which they belong.

Dado el momento demográfico que vivimos, la colección de volúmenes sobre literatura y mujer, de la UNED, no podía dejar pasar la oportunidad de reflexionar sobre ese gran componente identitario que es la edad. Esta, aunque fenómeno biológico, se interpreta socialmente y se articula en las estructuras de poder que gobiernan y definen las vidas tanto de hombres como de mujeres (y no solo en ese último tramo de la vida que tanto interés despierta últimamente). Como locus político donde se asienta lo que una mujer «debe» ser, es decir su «valor» social y cultural asociado a sus papeles de género, la edad presenta un fructífero campo de investigación para los estudios de la mujer. La exploración de textos y prácticas culturales nos permite diseccionar los discursos que ordenan nuestro concepto de edad, así como identificar sus mitos y su interacción con otros estereotipos. Los distintos capítulos del presente volumen constituyen un novedoso y original estudio y una reflexión sobre la representación literaria de las mujeres y sus edades, en las que se comprueba cómo el factor etario dialoga con el género, la clase, la religión entre otros factores sociales para definir lo que significa ser mujer en diversos contextos culturales. También se analiza con detalle la asimetría de género que existe en las distintas edades de la mujer y en los acontecimientos que tienen lugar en cada una, cómo viven las mujeres cada etapa y cómo escriben o se inscriben en ellas. La literatura, como la historiografía o los medios de comunicación, ha participado en la propagación de los significados culturales vinculados a la edad y a la mujer. Por ello es posible afirmar que la literatura, como discurso cultural y social, sirve a las mujeres para construirse a sí mismas, para liberar de significados culturales sus cuerpos cambiantes y resignificarlos después.

Mujeres de papel, sobre la pervivencia y reescrituras de mitos femeninos en Tejiendo el mito, sobre memoria, compromiso y autoficción en Ecos de la memoria y sobre espacios físicos y simbólicos de las mujeres en Mujeres a la conquista de espacios, el seminario ha dedicado su atención al tema de las migraciones, los exilios, las diásporas y la movilidad geográfica y cultural en general. Si en el imaginario de hace unas décadas los que emigraban eran sobre todo hombres, hace tiempo que se ha hecho evidente que los flujos migratorios no son una característica exclusivamente masculina. Es más, en la actualidad asistimos a una auténtica feminización de ciertas migraciones. ¿Cómo se refleja esto en la literatura?, ¿cómo lo ven y describen las mujeres?, ¿“viven” ellas el cruce de la frontera de forma distinta que los hombres? y ¿qué causas las llevan a traspasar las fronteras? Si las mujeres son por definición “extranjeras” en el mundo patriarcal, ¿acumulan en la migración una doble extranjería? Y una vez “en el otro lado”, ¿escriben en su propia lengua o en su lengua de adopción? Estos son algunos de los interrogantes que nos hemos planteado en esta nueva volumen del Seminario Permanente sobre Literatura y Mujer, de la UNED.
