A la Catalunya del segle XVII destaquen alguns gravadors xilogràfics, com Llorenç Deu (ca.1580-1648) o Joan Jolis (1675-1705), però,sens dubte, el lloc estel·lar i de primer ordre correspon a Pere abadal (ca.1630-1684), que, tant per la quantitat com per la qualitat de la seva producció, supera amb escreix la resta dels gravadors xilogràfics coneguts a Espanya en aquest moment. Pere Abadal grava les seves excel·lents estampes entre els anys 1650 i 1684 al taller de Moià (Barcelona) i és el patriarca d'un fecund llinatge de gravadors-impressors que posteriorment es bifurcaran per diferents zones del país (Igualada, Manresa, Mataró, Puigcerdà o la mateixa ciutat de Barcelona). Els seus descendents donaran també lloc a tallers molt actius que es prolongaran fins ben entrat el segle XX. L'obra gràfica dels Abadal és un exponent de la cultura majoritària, que ens revela els gustos i l'imaginari social de la Catalunya dels segles XVII i XVIII.
